Uchiko Sushi Chef Competes on Chopped Tonight
Sushi chef Angela Majko of Uchiko (4200 N. Lamar) will be one of four contestants competing on the Food Network's very popular cooking competition show Chopped tonight at 9pm CST. Uchiko has scheduled a watch party at a nearby bar, the Draught House Pub & Brewery (4112 Medical Pkwy.)
The casting directors from Chopped really must have liked what they saw in Austin last year. Hudson's on the Bend (3519 RR 620 N) sous chef McCaily Cranna competed last month, Angela Majko is up tonight, and we hear none other than David Garrido, chef/owner of the newly refurbished Garrido's (360 Nueces, #10) is scheduled to appear sometime in June. Great exposure for our local cooking talent.
It should come as no surprise that someone from Uchiko's kitchen would try out for Chopped, considering that the restaurant hosts it's own version of the popular show called 86'd, featuring cooks from Austin restaurants below the rank of sous chef. The third round of 86'd was just last week and our Carly Yansak was there. When I saw Uchiko Culinary Director Phillip Speer at the Austin Food & Wine Festival last Friday, he told me he was looking for some other space to host the 86'd competition on occasion so cooks from Uchi and Uchiko could compete without other contestants thinking they had an unfair home field advantage. Round four will be up in May and the final fifth round will offer winners from the first four contests the opportunity to compete for some pretty cool prizes. We'll be there.
Now, about that watch party. Uchiko encourages their friends and fans to join chef Angela Majko on the Draught House patio where the episode will be projected on a big screen. There will be drink specials and the Oyama food truck will be on hand selling their Mexican/Japanese fusion specialties. While Chopped fan chef Speer won't make it, he will be live tweeting during the episode from the @UchikoAustin Twitter handle.
