A University of Texas professor is being honored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

At a private luncheon today, Dr. Thomas Schatz will be honored as one of two 2012 Academy Film Scholars and presented with the first half of a $25,000 grant. His fellow 2012 honoree is Dr. Christopher Beach, who is based in Vermont. They join 13 other current Academy Film Scholars who have projects in progress.

Schatz is the Mary Gibbs Jones Centennial Chair of the Radio-Television-Film department at UT-Austin. He seeks to conduct a historical study of what he calls the "conglomerate age" in American cinema: from 1989, when Time-Warner and Sony-Columbia were formed, to present. Upon completion of his research, Schatz will return to the Academy to give a lecture on his findings.
