Undone: A Musicfest Tribute to Robert Earl Keen

(Right Ave.)

Robert Earl Keen as the "father" of the Texas/Red Dirt Music scene makes plenty of sense, so Undone, a double-disc tribute by some of that scene's leading lights, was inevitable. No matter how big a Keen fan you are, it's where you stand on artists such as Wade Bowen, Jason Boland, Randy Rogers, Cody Canada, and the other 18 that appear here that will go a long way on deciding your appreciation for the proceedings, recorded live in Colorado, January 2008. There are outstanding tracks, but the mostly acoustic performances manage to consistently miss the guts of what Keen's writing about, while also losing most of his melodies. Honorary Texan Chris Knight's title track cover digs deep, and Brandon Rhyder's "Carolina" is starkly affecting. The second disc is rescued somewhat by five songs from Keen and his band, including the drowsy new "Goodbye Cleveland."

what do you know pissed tx music fan Feb 24, 2009 - 05:21 pm
I am so sick of the holier than thou attitude every single writer at the Austin Chronicle seems to have.

Negative reviews and criticism from writers who don't have a clue what they are talking about or what the majority of the music listening public in Austin like or dislike.

You guys are too old and jaded to give accurate reviews on records by artists you haven't seen two hundred times or are buddies with.

You don't even give the legends of Austin music a break, " i.e. the 3 star review for Willie and The Wheel record"

You guys are killing the Austin music scene by bashing every single artist in the state for making records that don't sound like the bands on whatever blog you steal your opinions from.

You are too old and your opinion on true TX music sucks.

Why don't you try opening your ears for a change and quit trying to be so fucking cool all the time.

You all suck and I will never believe a word you write.

When Austin is reduced to piano and cover bars you can thank yourselves for running every single honest musician in the state out of town with your nit picking self righteous bullshit reviews.

You should be proud of yourselves for helping to destroy the Austin music scene.

Screw you and your bullshit rag of a paper.
