SXSW Platters

Friday

BY JIM CALIGIURI

Hayes Carll

Trouble in Mind (Lost Highway)

On his big-label debut, Trouble in Mind, Hayes Carll doesn't stray far from where his music's taken him on his first two discs. Some rave about the Houston native's talents as a Texas troubadour, but, to these ears, he sounds as derivative and uninspired as any other "Texas music" act, singing about whiskey and girls in a tired drawl you've surely heard before. There are bits of Todd Snider's folk and Steve Earle's energetic country twang in Carll's musical vision, but he never distances himself enough from either to sound fresh, no matter how many semiwitty turns of phrase he generates. With backing from Nashville (Al Perkins, Dan Baird, Will Kimbrough) and Austin (Lisa Pankratz, Brad Fordham), there's some warmth in the slight sway of "Beaumont" and the rumbling "Faulkner Street," but such moments are rare amongst the ramble of Trouble in Mind. (Friday, March 14, Cedar Street Courtyard, 12mid.)

Great Talent in a crowed Field Big Bri in H-Town Mar 14, 2008 - 03:13 pm
To be compared with the likes of Todd Snider and Steve Earle is a great compliment no matter how similar. It is no secret now that Texas is swollen with outstanding song writers and intriging performers. Let us not fall into the trap of comparing all these wonderful artist against each other but rather against the dimishing quality of main stream music. Hayes's new album is a wonderful compliment to an already outstanding catalog. To think that an artist is to re-invent themselves with each new album is ridiclous. In fact, those who do often flop and find themselves trying to get back to their roots.

Your Cherrios Donnie Courville Mar 14, 2008 - 03:20 pm
I've never heard of Hazy pissin' in anyones Cherrios....it sounds like maybe he did in yours. His material may meander through some of the same subject matter but his approach is vividly from left feild. He rhymes like not other and he has a feel all his own. He's a whole lot less "Texas Music" thats for sure. Alot has happened in a hand full of years and hes just getting started....Give him a break. Its his first shot in the big leagues and all the heavy hitters don't mind him going to bat. That should say something....Not sayng you should not have a negative view here but sometimes I wonder why people write what they write.....I'm sorry, I forgot your name....?

Before anyone gets too riled up about what this irrelevant hack has to say - try browsing through his past reviews. Clearly, the reviewer is no fan of the genre and overly critical of artists in the "Texas Music Scene" (as he contemptuously labels it) that's under the age of 60. He pays lip service to the late offerings of past greats but it's not authentic - clearly this isn't his music. True fans of the genre can appreciate the real, special talents out there right now like Hayes Carll and Adam Carrol. These artists are just as talented as their predecessors, if not moreso, and guys like Ray Wylie Hubbard and Robert Earl Keen have even acknowledged as much.

One would think that living in Austin, you would have a pretty taste in music. After reading this review I realize you don't. Must be a Cory Morrow fan.

Missing Something Guest Rob May 22, 2008 - 08:47 am
I think this CD is as good as I have heard from an artist in a couple of years. I even told a friend this is typical Grammy material. Maybe you should have listened to more than just the 11 second samples in the iStore. I have to profoundly disagree with this review.

Seriously... Nudd Nov 27, 2008 - 02:59 pm
One of the best written, performed albums of the year. Not a bad song on it. A 2... you have got to be kidding...
