 Mon Jan 19, 11:17am
Not to be left out of the inaugural fun (or ratings bonanza), ESPN Classic will be airing 10 hours of their Breaking Barriers program on Tuesday featuring groundbreaking African-American athletes such as Arthur Ashe, Jack Johnson, and Eddie Robinson. Today, MLK Day, they are airing seven hours of BB with programs devoted to Jackie Robinson, Hank Aaron, and others.

 Fri Jan 16, 4:20pm
The Austin Turfcats of the Southern Indoor Football League held a big shindig for the media on Thursday at the Four Season's Hotel where they introduced the coaching staff, discussed ticket prices, and announced two player signings.

Boot Camp Challenge

 Thu Jan 15, 4:01pm
I just turned 40. I'm recently single and have no kids. I'm 5 feet 7 inches tall and weigh – according to the scale at the Chronicle which many female employees claim is inaccurate, figure that – 196 pounds fully clothed (including hat). And it's "resolution" time of year so you know on the top of my Resolutions '09 list is losing weight now that I'm back out on the market. I've made some attempts lately to eat healthier, drink much less, and exercise but I fear I'll slip back into my bad habits as the month of January fades into February. I need some help. Enter Boot Camp Challenge.

TXRG Wants You

 Sat Jan 10, 9:33am
Another year, another flat-track Roller Derby season. While the Texas Rollergirls don't play in Austin again until the March 1 season opener, first up, there's the sixth annual Whammy Awards (you can vote for your favorite rollergirls here).

BCS BS

 Fri Jan 9, 5:31pm
Last night's game between the Chokelahoma Sooners and the Florida Gators was supposed to give college football a clear-cut champion, but after a sloppy game all fans are left with are a paper champion and three teams with legitimate beefs. The Bowl Championship Series is bull and should be revised like the latest version of Vista before frustrated football fans give up on the whole darn system. Give us a playoff system and for the love of the game stop sending Bob Stoops’ teams to the title game to get shellacked!

Bill Would Move UIL State Competitions Away From Austin

 Fri Jan 9, 7:18am
Brownsville father-and-son legislators Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr. and Rep. Eddie Lucio III have filed bills that would bar the University Interscholastic League – the governing body for public school academic, athletic, and musical competitions in Texas – from holding "regional or statewide" competitions in the same location in consecutive years.

Turfcats Announce Coaching Staff

 Thu Jan 8, 4:24pm
Turfcats General Manager Ronald Oswalt announced today that former Dallas Cowboy and Texas Longhorn Chris Duliban will be the Austin Turfacts first-ever head coach. Another former Longhorn, Kerry Cash, will be an assistant coach for Duliban. Cash also spent some with the NFL's Indianapolis Colts.

Aztex Sign a 'Franchise Player'

 Wed Jan 7, 6:30pm
The Austin Aztex are just awaiting confirmation from the United Soccer Leagues to announce the schedule for their inaugural season in USL-1. What we do know: The five-month, 30-game schedule will run mid-April through mid-September; with 11 teams in the league, the Aztex will face each other team three times, in addition to U.S. Open Cup games and exhibition games – some of which will be announced early next week. All games will be at Nelson Field, mostly on weekend evenings. More info at www.austinaztex.com.

MLB Network on the Air

 Fri Jan 2, 3:11pm
It's only the second day of the year and 2009 is already looking better than '08. On January 1, 2009, the MLB Network began airing on Time Warner Cable Ch. 423 and DirecTV Ch. 213 – available at no extra charge to TWC digital-cable subscribers, unlike the NFL Network which is only available by subscription through DirecTV. I tuned in a couple hours ago and haven't changed the channel since. Lou Gehrig's courageous speech (baseball's Gettysburg Address), Roberto Clemente's tragic flight, Jackie Robinson's heroic debut as the first African-American player in the league, and Cal Ripken's epic consecutive-games-played streak are just a few of the stories I've seen today on the MLB Network. Happy New Year, baseball fans!

Top 10 Soccer Stories of the Year

1) Austin Aztex a winner: This one’s easy: a great organization and a great first season. The United Soccer League First Division future starts in early April.

England Plays Through

 Mon Dec 22, 6:03pm , 2008
It's a pretty dead time in the football world, with just about everybody in midwinter break – except England, of course, where there's the traditional full slate of games on Boxing Day, then another two days later on Sunday. Fox Soccer Channel will show four English Premiere League games each day (schedule below), but Stoke City fans will doubtless be at Fadó Irish Pub Friday morning at 6:40am to watch the Potters host Manchester United (pay-per-view only).

Slaton Propels Texans

 Sat Dec 20, 6:19pm , 2008
When the Texans drafted Steve Slaton out of West Virginia as the 26th pick in the third round of the 2008 NFL draft, it wasn't heralded as the answer to their longstanding rushing woes. Fourteen games, 1,429 yards from scrimmage, and nine TDs later Slaton is looking like a brilliant draft pick for the Gary Kubiak regime. With the third-most rushing yards in the AFC many Texans fans felt Slaton was deserving of a Pro Bowl nod and he's certainly proven to be a playmaker for Houston's explosive offense.

UT Falls to Stanford in NCAA Semifinals

 Fri Dec 19, 11:24am , 2008
As broadcast nationally on ESPNU, the Texas Longhorns volleyball team bowed out of the NCAA tournament Thursday night in the semifinals held in Omaha, Neb. No. 3 UT held a dominating 2-0 lead but lost the next three games to the No. 2 Stanford Cardinal. Six of seven starters return next year for UT which bodes well for Jerritt Elliott's already impressive squad.

Aztex Roster Hunt Begins in Earnest, and More

 Wed Dec 17, 6:30pm , 2008
Busy days for Austin Aztex head coach Adrian Heath. He was at the United Soccer League's Player Showcase in Charleston, S.C., this week – checking out some 90 prospects in nine games over three days, he was about "footballed out," he said Wednesday. The next two weeks he oversees the Aztex' first-ever youth soccer camps (Dec. 22-24 and Dec. 29-31; see details here), but the focus remains on building a roster for the Aztex's first season in the USL First Division, which starts just about four months from now, in early April.

'The Best Game Ever: Giants vs. Colts, 1958, and the Birth of the Modern NFL'

 Wed Dec 17, 1:06pm , 2008
One hundred eighty-six pounds. That was the perfect playing weight for Baltimore Colts wide receiver Raymond Berry. In the two weeks before the December 28, 1958 NFL championship game at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, Berry weighed 175 pounds. He knew this because he traveled with a scale and weighed himself before each game. Berry had developed a reputation as one of the most dangerous players on the field due to his precision and methodical approach to a rough game. Journalists from Baltimore still tell stories of listening to Berry catch Johnny Unitas passes in the dark after long practices. The concept? Berry wanted to know his routes “blindfolded.”

Huh? Messiah College's Nick Blossey was voted the Most Outstanding Player in the NCAA Division III Men's Tournament, even though he didn't play a minute of the entire tournament. Explanation below.

 Sat Dec 6, 10:51am , 2008
Last month up in Oregon, Portland's Rose City Rollers played gracious hosts to the top-ranked teams in flat track rollerderby for the Women's Flat Tracks Derby Association nationals. Tonight, Austin's own Texas Rollergirls get to return the favor when the Texecutioners take on visitors the Wheels of Justice.

Mack Attack

 Thu Dec 4, 11:01pm , 2008
It's rare that anyone really looks at a sky banner: but there were some wry grins on the UT campus today around noon as a plane traced lazy circles in the sky, dragging this message for Mack Brown across the blue:

Aztex Ally With Rayados of Monterrey

 Wed Dec 3, 6:12pm , 2008
The Austin Aztex have announced a strategic alliance with Club de Futbol Monterrey – also known as Rayados (the striped ones) – of the Mexican first division. Among other things, Aztex players get a great shot to move up to top-division football, the team gets a chance to pick up top-level players on loan, and fans get to see Rayados and perhaps other top Mexican teams in exhibitions at the Aztex home field. Speaking of which, sorry I can't tell you where that home field's going to be, but by the time you read this, that agreement should be finalized, and it's good news; see this space for details as soon as they're released.
