 Mon Mar 15, 7:22pm
There are endless nonprofit organizations created all over the world. Some benefit children. Some benefit refugees or victims of natural disasters. We know about the need to fight hunger in Africa. We know about organizations doing their part to help the people of Haiti.

 Fri Mar 12, 6:11pm
In case you didn't know from the pre-SXSW traffic insanity on Red River, the UIL Boys High School Basketball Tournament, aka the State Championship series, is all over the Frank Erwin Center this week. As usual, the backstory is the story, namely the hard work and mutual support of one inner-city Houston team, the Yates Lions.

It's been inevitable all year that stand-out Austin Toros guard Alonzo Gee would get the big-league call-up. Yesterday, March 7, it was announced that the Washington Wizards of the NBA have signed him.

Sports and Social Justice With David Zirin

 Fri Mar 5, 12:20pm
David Zirin collects accolades like baseball cards. He was named one of the UTNE Reader's "50 Visionaries Who Are Changing Our World," he’s been awarded Press Action's Sportswriter of the Year twice, and often graces television screens as a guest analyst on various CNN, ESPN, and MSNBC programs. However, Zirin is much more than a sports journalist.

In A People’s History of Sports in the United States ($26.95, The New Press), author David Zirin welcomes the reader to the proverbial adults table of American sports with a historical blow-by-blow of social engagement, race relations, gender struggles, and political upheaval that have surrounded some of our favorite pastimes.

Learn to Curl

 Thu Feb 25, 12:12am
As they say on the USA Curling website, “Curling Rocks.” Other than our stunning defeat of Canada in men’s hockey, the event I’ve heard most discussed and the one I’ve watched the most during these Winter Games is curling. A sport America sucks at, by the way.

Like a Boss

 Wed Feb 24, 9:00am
Call it the Texas derby derby: Four flat track roller derby teams from around the Lone Star State, competing for bragging rights and the Governor's Cup. This weekend the Texas Rollergirls got to knock the winter rust off their wheels with their first bout of the 2010 season, and another championship for the trophy case.

Tweeting With Adam Schefter

 Mon Feb 22, 5:53pm
In the summer of 2009 ESPN snagged Adam Schefter from the NFL Network. In its short existence, Schefter had become the journalistic identity of the upstart NFL channel using crazy and old-fashioned reporting techniques such as talking to people, listening to people, and delivering information in an earnest and straightforward manner.

Sore Muscles? Put Some Tape on 'Em!

 Sat Feb 13, 3:12pm
There’s really no cure for the kind of crazy that possesses someone to run 26 miles, but there is a new way to more effectively manage some of the pain that goes along with it.

A Super Bowl to Remember

 Mon Feb 8, 12:21pm
The Super Bowl is arguably the biggest sporting event in the world. The World Cup (which only occurs every four years) would get my vote – but that's a whole 'nother story. I had chosen not to blog or tweet the Bowl because there is such a media overkill associated with this event I didn't see the point; but this game was so special I had to join the chorus.

Council's new partnership with flat-track Roller Derby league (video)

Seems like Texas Rollergirl and Women's Flat Track Derby Association president Bloody Mary's wish that Austin would be really proud of this homegrown sport really got City Council's attention. First Mayor Lee Leffingwell declared Texas Rollergirls Day, now the city has entered into a new partnership for practice space with the local league.

Tonight is the opening night of the 2010 season for the Lonestar Rollergirls. If you're a longtime fan, it's also the last bout night when you'll wonder how you'll find parking at the Austin Convention Center.

Spinning Wheels and Spinning Discs

Break out the champagne, Roller Derby fans. Not only does Whip It, Drew Barrymore's love letter to Austin and the Lonestar Rollergirls, get released today on DVD and Blu-ray, but the Women's Flat Track Derby Association's fourth quarter rankings are out. No shocker, the nation's No. 2 team, the Texas Rollergirls reign in the South-Central region.

Two Sexes Only, Please!

 Tue Jan 26, 11:22am
It is mind-boggling the knots people will tie themselves into in order not to face something staring them in the face. How long will it be until we grow out of the notion that anyone whose particular biology does not clearly put them in the category of "male" or "female" is a freak with a condition that must be corrected?

The Lessons of Losing: Texas Is No. 2

 Thu Jan 14, 2:50pm
We’re No. 2. Somehow it just doesn’t ring. But it reminds us just how many more serendipitous lessons there are in losses, for both the losers and the winners. Somehow I can’t help but feel proud of the Texas Longhorns and what they almost pulled off in a schizophrenic 13-1 season. By now everyone knows the somewhat inflated score – 37-21.
