Fallout from "Le Main de Dieu"
Nick Barbaro
Fri Nov 20, 2:56pm
From the Headline Wire:
• "French president Sarkozy apologizes to Ireland" for the Thierry Henry hand-ball that knocked Ireland out of next year's World Cup. ("I told Brian Cowen how sorry I was for them," said Sarkozy.)
• "Economic fallout in Ireland over elimination" ("It would have lifted the gloom and got people spending.")

Always the class act, Titans owner Bud Adams incurred a $250,000 fine for flipping the bird twice during Tennessee's victory in Buffalo last Sunday. The man who moved the Oilers out of town will be returning to the scene of the crime this Monday with Houston high school hero Vince Young back taking the snaps.
McCoy the Top QB Ever? Talk to the Ghost of VY.
Joe O'Connell
Fri Nov 20, 1:08pm
Vince Young. Go ahead and say it. Everyone else will repeat the mantra this weekend and on through the end of this season of timidly high Texas Longhorn expectations. VY is the cloud that hangs over the Colt McCoy-led Horns as they creep through mostly mediocre opponents ever so close to a spot in the national title game.

First, third, fourth, second. The Texas Rollergirls traveling team, the Texecutioners, wanted to bring the Women's Flat Track Derby Association championship, the Hydra, back to Austin, but took second place instead.

"Two down," Hydra said, "One to go." The ex-skater after whom the Women's Flat Track Derby Association national championship is named was talking Texecutioner.
Texecutioners in Philly

Sat Nov 14, 1:22pm
Greetings from the Philadelphia, where the fastest and the finest in flat track roller derby have gathered for the Women's Flat Track Derby Association's 2009 nationals, the Declaration of Derby.
Fans’ Man Crush on Shipley Blocks McCoy’s Heisman March
Joe O'Connell
Fri Nov 13, 4:44pm
What’s a quarterback to do? Texas Longhorn fans have a serious man (and woman) crush on his sleek, graceful best friend, and poor Colt McCoy waits for a little more Heisman Trophy love. Austin radio talk icon Dale Dudley admits to a man crush on the uber-talented singer/songwriter/heartbreaker Bob Schneider, who makes Dudley feel all warm and ooky inside.
Texecutioners Make Their Demands

Tue Nov 10, 2:06pm
Weekends don't get much bigger in roller derby: On Friday, the best teams from the Women's Flat Track Derby Association will meet in Philadelphia for the 2009 Declaration of Derby national finals. As befits the founding mothers of the sport, Austin's own Texas Rollergirls took the time to list their rider requirements.

After falling short of the playoffs this year the Austin Aztex have announced that they will not be picking up the 2010 options on 14 players from their '09 squad. See below the jump for coach Adrian Heath's comments and a list of the players released.
Longhorns, It's Time for Your Close-Up
Joe O'Connell
Fri Nov 6, 12:41pm
A few days after the Texas Longhorns defense, if not its offense, manhandled Oklahoma State 41-14, I went to the set of the television show The Deep End, an ABC lawyer drama/comedy shooting in Dallas, and it clicked for me: it’s all about attitude from here on out.

Boo.
Welcome to Halloween football where the Longhorns sweat the weekend that killed last season and Oklahoma State Cowboys fear the wrath of "Crazy" Mike Gundy if they blow it once again (11 straight losses to Mack Brown's boys? Scarrrryyy …).
Big 12 Power Rankings: Week 9

Fri Oct 30, 12:30pm
For Oklahoma State, playing Texas has been akin to a hellish trip through the kind of House of Horrors where things go so bad you have little recourse but to vomit first and then scream, later, when you've finally realized exactly what has happened.
Gold Stars... for Citizenship, Sexual Expression, and Now, SOCCER!

It's not like it's difficult to crack jokes about gay boys playing soccer
Gay Pimp's "Soccer Practice," anyone? But after watching Austin's Gold Stars play, I'm afraid they might (excuse the parlance) cut a bitch.
Flat Track Update

Tue Oct 27, 4:31pm
The Texas Rollergirls' home season may be over, but that doesn't mean all is peaceful in the land of flat track. First things first: You may have seen a billboard for the Mansion of Terror haunted house with a young woman being threatened by a ghoul: that's Scream Queen contest winner Big Nasty of the TXRG Rec'n'Rollerderby league. The woman, not the ghoul.

Being a Texans fan is like … well, I'm not sure what to compare it to. It's rough, that's for sure. Always a bridesmaid, never a bride as they say. The Titans wearing Oilers throwback jerseys in their 59-0 loss to the Patriots last Sunday doesn't help either. At least Bud Adams' Family were thoroughly embarrassed by the Tom Brady Bunch on national TV.
D Sends Horns Toward Imperfectly Perfect Season

Thu Oct 22, 4:30pm
First off, let’s get to the prediction: The Texas Longhorns will win out, dominate in the Big 12 Championship game and play Alabama for the national title. Whether or not they get crushed in that game will have very little to do with the Texas offense and everything to do with the Horns defense. Let’s forget about the Texas offense completely.

Wed Oct 21, 4:29pm
Memorable image of the week: Returning from a trip to Oklahoma over the weekend, where I witnessed firsthand the highs and lows of football seasons on the brink of both utter collapse and abounding hope, the pilot of our rental spaceship (a rather poorly-designed Nissan Versa) pointed out a group of hammered-drunk dudes on the side of the road …

Going to someone else's high school reunion/homecoming is sort of like looking at friends’ vacation slides or being asked to say something nice about their ugly baby. The iceberg of the story is hidden from you – who was cool, who was a fool, who was an angry young woman. The slate instead is wiped clean, leaving the outsider to make it up as he goes along.

One look at the last three athletes PrimeTime has "helped," though, suggests otherwise.
Dez Bryant. Michael Crabtree. Adam "Pacman" Jones.
