Aztex Clean House

 Fri Nov 6, 2:17pm
After falling short of the playoffs this year the Austin Aztex have announced that they will not be picking up the 2010 options on 14 players from their '09 squad. See below the jump for coach Adrian Heath's comments and a list of the players released.

Longhorns, It's Time for Your Close-Up

 Fri Nov 6, 12:41pm
A few days after the Texas Longhorns defense, if not its offense, manhandled Oklahoma State 41-14, I went to the set of the television show The Deep End, an ABC lawyer drama/comedy shooting in Dallas, and it clicked for me: it’s all about attitude from here on out.

C3 Presents Beats New Brohemia, Advances to ASL Championship

 Fri Oct 30, 1:52pm
Bryce Fegley homered twice to drive in five runs, while pitcher Dirk Stahlnecker and C3 Presents allowed just 18 hits to beat the Nihilist Fucking Eagles of New Brohemia 16-7 in the Alternative Softball League South Division Final.

It's Halloween, Do You Know Where the Scariest Football Game Is?

 Fri Oct 30, 1:35pm
Boo.

Welcome to Halloween football where the Longhorns sweat the weekend that killed last season and Oklahoma State Cowboys fear the wrath of "Crazy" Mike Gundy if they blow it once again (11 straight losses to Mack Brown's boys? Scarrrryyy …).

Big 12 Power Rankings: Week 9

 Fri Oct 30, 12:30pm
For Oklahoma State, playing Texas has been akin to a hellish trip through the kind of House of Horrors where things go so bad you have little recourse but to vomit first and then scream, later, when you've finally realized exactly what has happened.

Gold Stars... for Citizenship, Sexual Expression, and Now, SOCCER!

 Wed Oct 28, 2:32pm
It's not like it's difficult to crack jokes about gay boys playing soccer… Gay Pimp's "Soccer Practice," anyone? But after watching Austin's Gold Stars play, I'm afraid they might (excuse the parlance) cut a bitch.

Flat Track Update

 Tue Oct 27, 4:31pm
The Texas Rollergirls' home season may be over, but that doesn't mean all is peaceful in the land of flat track. First things first: You may have seen a billboard for the Mansion of Terror haunted house with a young woman being threatened by a ghoul: that's Scream Queen contest winner Big Nasty of the TXRG Rec'n'Rollerderby league. The woman, not the ghoul.

Texans Flirt With Success, Bandwagon Jumpers Sure to Follow

 Thu Oct 22, 6:07pm
Being a Texans fan is like … well, I'm not sure what to compare it to. It's rough, that's for sure. Always a bridesmaid, never a bride as they say. The Titans wearing Oilers throwback jerseys in their 59-0 loss to the Patriots last Sunday doesn't help either. At least Bud Adams' Family were thoroughly embarrassed by the Tom Brady Bunch on national TV.

D Sends Horns Toward Imperfectly Perfect Season

 Thu Oct 22, 4:30pm
First off, let’s get to the prediction: The Texas Longhorns will win out, dominate in the Big 12 Championship game and play Alabama for the national title. Whether or not they get crushed in that game will have very little to do with the Texas offense and everything to do with the Horns defense. Let’s forget about the Texas offense completely.

Big 12 Power Rankings: Week 7

 Wed Oct 21, 4:29pm
Memorable image of the week: Returning from a trip to Oklahoma over the weekend, where I witnessed firsthand the highs and lows of football seasons on the brink of both utter collapse and abounding hope, the pilot of our rental spaceship (a rather poorly-designed Nissan Versa) pointed out a group of hammered-drunk dudes on the side of the road …

It's Kevin Durant Day

 Tue Oct 20, 2:00am
Today (Tue., Oct. 20) has officially been proclaimed by Mayor Lee Leffingwell and Sen. Royce West as "Kevin Durant Day." This proclamation celebrating UT's superstar forward coincides with his Oklahoma City Thunder playing the San Antonio Spurs at the Erwin Center tonight at 7:30pm in an exhibition match.

High School Homecoming

 Mon Oct 19, 5:34pm
Going to someone else's high school reunion/homecoming is sort of like looking at friends’ vacation slides or being asked to say something nice about their ugly baby. The iceberg of the story is hidden from you – who was cool, who was a fool, who was an angry young woman. The slate instead is wiped clean, leaving the outsider to make it up as he goes along.

HD 48 GOP Primary a Race

 Mon Oct 19, 1:22pm
Looks like a second media personality has decided they'd like to turn Democratic state Rep. Donna Howard's House District 48 seat Republican. After banker-turned-documentarian Glenn Bass threw his hat in the GOP primary ring, now morning radio host Dan Neil is getting in on the action.

Gagnon First Star Promoted to Dallas

 Fri Oct 16, 12:16pm
The Texas (Cedar Park) Stars are proud to announce their first player promotion to the NHL. Center Aaron Gagnon was called up today by the Dallas Stars after scoring an empty-net goal in Cedar Park last night in Texas' 2-0 victory over Grand Rapids. When Gagnon takes the ice for Dallas, it'll serve as his NHL debut.

Big 12 Power Rankings: Week 6

Deion Sanders likes to call himself a "mentor." He believes he can help young athletes make positive choices in their lives. And perhaps he can.

One look at the last three athletes PrimeTime has "helped," though, suggests otherwise.

Dez Bryant. Michael Crabtree. Adam "Pacman" Jones.

Bob Stoops on Line 2

 Thu Oct 15, 3:29pm
(Either this message was left in my voicemail or the bad dream was the result of too many pregame corny dogs.) Hey, Joe! How goes it, my scribbling compadre? Just wanted to touch base before the big one drops, and I’m not talking another UT ball carrier, bubba.

Cats for Calvello

 Tue Oct 13, 4:00pm
Triumph and tragedy this weekend at the TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls Calvello Cup championship. In a surprise upset, the Hellcats beat the seemingly unstoppable Cherry Bombs 44-35. But the bad news is that two skaters with the Cherry Bombs suffered fairly serious injuries.

Calvello Cup '09

 Fri Oct 9, 4:57pm
If you've seen Whip It but have never seen a real-life banked track roller derby bout, then this is your lucky weekend. The TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls bring their current season to a close with the 2009 Calvello Cup Championship.

Longhorn Football Season Is a Sitcom in the Making

 Fri Oct 9, 1:14pm
Like coach Mack Brown, I spent the Longhorns’ bye week watching tape. My TiVo was chock-full of new sitcoms to evaluate. Let’s put them to the tape and see how the season, both football and funny, stacks up:

Big 12 Power Rankings: Week 5

 Thu Oct 8, 3:35pm
The University of Oklahoma has quite a bit of history in Miami. Once upon a time in Sooner legend, the Orange Bowl was a rite of passage for young men like Brian Bosworth, Charles Thompson, and a whole slew of Sooners, all tweaked to the gills on steroids, cocaine, and rape.

Meet the Real Babe Ruthless

 Tue Oct 6, 5:35pm
As fits a film about Austin's other favorite sport, there's been a lot of derby love for Whip It. Tonight there's an opportunity to meet the real Babe Ruthless at the Alamo Ritz, and Wednesday night the TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls will be ready for their close up.

Turfcats Leave SIFL, Join IFL

 Fri Oct 2, 7:41am
The Austin Turfcats have signed a letter of intent to join the Indoor Football League for the 2010 season, leaving behind the Southern Indoor Football League after their franchise's inaugural season.

Out of the Ring, Into the Pen

 Thu Oct 1, 5:51pm
Austin-born junior middleweight boxer James Kirkland was sentenced to two years in federal prison last week. Kirkland was charged in April with illegal possession of a firearm that he'd bought at the monthly Saxet Gun Show in North Austin (he'd been convicted of armed robbery in 2003, making him a felon in possession).
