There are endless nonprofit organizations created all over the world. Some benefit children. Some benefit refugees or victims of natural disasters. We know about the need to fight hunger in Africa. We know about organizations doing their part to help the people of Haiti.

In case you didn't know from the pre-SXSW traffic insanity on Red River, the UIL Boys High School Basketball Tournament, aka the State Championship series, is all over the Frank Erwin Center this week. As usual, the backstory is the story, namely the hard work and mutual support of one inner-city Houston team, the Yates Lions.

Learn to Curl

Thu Feb 25, 12:12am
As they say on the USA Curling website, “Curling Rocks.” Other than our stunning defeat of Canada in men’s hockey, the event I’ve heard most discussed and the one I’ve watched the most during these Winter Games is curling. A sport America sucks at, by the way.

Call it the Texas derby derby: Four flat track roller derby teams from around the Lone Star State, competing for bragging rights and the Governor's Cup. In the summer of 2009 ESPN snagged Adam Schefter from the NFL Network. In its short existence, Schefter had become the journalistic identity of the upstart NFL channel using crazy and old-fashioned reporting techniques such as talking to people, listening to people, and delivering information in an earnest and straightforward manner.

A Super Bowl to Remember

The Super Bowl is arguably the biggest sporting event in the world. The World Cup (which only occurs every four years) would get my vote – but that's a whole 'nother story. I had chosen not to blog or tweet the Bowl because there is such a media overkill associated with this event I didn't see the point; but this game was so special I had to join the chorus.

Seems like Texas Rollergirl and Women's Flat Track Derby Association president Bloody Mary's wish that Austin would be really proud of this homegrown sport really got City Council's attention. First Mayor Lee Leffingwell declared Texas Rollergirls Day, now the city has entered into a new partnership for practice space with the local league.

It is mind-boggling the knots people will tie themselves into in order not to face something staring them in the face. The Lessons of Losing: Texas Is No. 2
Joe O'Connell
Thu Jan 14, 2:50pm
We’re No. 2. Somehow it just doesn’t ring. But it reminds us just how many more serendipitous lessons there are in losses, for both the losers and the winners. Somehow I can’t help but feel proud of the Texas Longhorns and what they almost pulled off in a schizophrenic 13-1 season. By now everyone knows the somewhat inflated score – 37-21.
