Re: Daniel Tobin's letter - by 2-wheel rebel | hide/show
"A police officer shouts "hey you," and so my friend got off his bicycle to see what the police officer was yelling at us for."

---

That sucks! When riding down on 6th, I DON'T acknowledge the police are yelling at me! I Just keep riding and don't turn around. I'll plead ignorance later if you have to. They've never chased me... not yet anyway.

Note: don't ride on 6th when it's really busy w/ drunk pedestrians, you don't know what direction they're going to walk. 11-17-2008

Biking in Buffalo by guest | hide/show
Sorry to hear the tough times for cyclist in Austin. I moved to Buffalo a few years ago and find most everyone is very tolerant of cyclist including the police. If you are looking for a bike friendly community it is here. Move here...please.

on your next bike..

I recommend the: Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit U-lock. It works for me, so far anyway.

These are worth looking into: Siren Padlock

Couple other tips:

-Cable locks are pretty much worthless.

-Make sure you record the serial number of your bike if you ever want the police to have a chance at recovering it.

-(never done this but it sounds like a great idea:) write two copies of a note that says: "This bike was stolen from ____ _____. Please call this number: ___-____". Laminate them, and place one in the head tube, and another in the seat tube. If a thief tries to get it serviced, bike shops just might find the note.

S ATX cruzer good tips, thanks. Haven't heard the one about the note in the frame or fork head, good idea. Before I knew any better as with most of the others I know we used cable locks. Huge mistake, cable locks as you saw are WORTHLESS.

One friend had cable lock with cable the size of your thumb, WORTHLESS, he was off the bike for ten minutes and zap it was gone, as an insult they just left the cable lock on the ground looking like it had been sliced laser.

You must be registered to comment. What's the upside?
Here are some ways to look at the bright side of this: 1) you can use a witty screen name that has nothing to do with your real name (as long as no one else has been witty in that exact way before you), 2) you will have to do this only once, and 3) because everyone must register, you'll be able to keep up with your virtual friends and nemeses.  close
