Where There's Smoke, There's Vegans

By now we've all heard the story – late last week, when a 911 caller reported smoke pouring from Bert's Bar-B-Q on west MLK, the call was pushed to the backburner, as the dispatcher thought the smoke a byproduct of the eatery smoking their meat. Some 45 minutes later a crew was dispatched, but by that time the restaurant was completely lost.
News 8 notes the irony of a fire house sitting a block away, but please, allow us to take it one step further: sitting two buildings down was none other than Austin Fire Station 2, home to the city's infamous vegan firefighters. As the New York Times wrote in a profile last year:
"The five firefighters of Team C at Firehouse 2… now eat vegan, taking turns whipping up plant-based fare like meatless and cheeseless pizza, pasta primavera and spinach enchiladas."
Now look at this picture on their Web site. Do these guys look like they'd shed one tear for a burnt barbecue restaurant?
Just sayin', is all.
