Breaking: Northcross Development Stopped for 60 Days

 Wed Dec 13, 2:39pm , 2006

Big news out of city hall: Councilmember Mike Martinez has announced Wal-Mart is undertaking a 60-day moratorium on development at Northcross. "This is a huge step in the right direction," reads a press release from Martinez. "The Mayor and Council members worked together on this deal, and I want the residents of the neighborhoods to know that we hear their concerns loud and clear. This will allow for more time to answer questions, re-notify, if necessary, and gain more input from the community," Martinez continues.

The moratorium opens a massive pressure-release valve. Scheduled to take the Northcross development up at their meeting tomorrow, intensity was building on City Council to act. Tomorrow being their last meeting of the year, the possibility existed that large portions of Northcross would have been demolished before Council's next meeting in the new year. With the moratorium, the mall will be unaffected when Council returns in January.

What a load of crap m1ek Dec 13, 2006 - 03:22 pm
The neighbors don't want Wal-Mart, period. And their claims to support a new urbanist dense pedestrian-friendly redevelopment of Northcross are a lie too - previous efforts to densify the area were opposed by these very neighborhoods.

Boo, council. Delaying isn't leadership; you're still going to have the same choice 60 days from now (decaying mall or Wal-Mart).

I like empty Crime-ridden Parking Lots... Yuppie who loves asphalt Dec 13, 2006 - 04:29 pm
HOOORAY! The Council is allowing for my empty-crack deal pick up location to continue for at least 60 more days!!!

I love the vast expanse of empty parking lot, and the sparse tenants and population of shoppers. It makes it PERFECT for me to get crack and meth deals done after dark...

In addition, I think the brown stone that reminds me of a jail is absolutely BEAUTIFUL for me to drive past on the way to my bungalow style home.

I hope we can keep northcross mall desolate for years to come. As a matter of fact, I hope to start a REAL business of drug deals in mall parking lots...next stop, next decaying mall in Austin...HIGHLAND!!!

Whoooooohooooo

Dude, selling your town to corporate demons is BADASS!! WOOOHH!! I know I can't get out of bed in the morning without the stench of fresh-roasted global exploitation to get me going. Screw all those yuppies who care more about local business than slave-made clothing. Democracy is for rich hippies!

Thank you city council, I am amazed and overjoyed.

Can't you find some commune to go rot away on?

Then, instead of "fresh roasted global exploitation" you can wake up smelling your happy compost pile.

don't shop there.
