Listen Up: Strayhorn Ain't Declaring Yet

Talking, listening

Alternately "listening to the people of Austin," "listening to the people of this city," and "at the listening stage," Carole Keeton Strayhorn's quickly called press availability outside the Old Pecan Street Cafe yesterday made one thing resoundingly clear: She's not announcing for mayor.

She's Listening.

Did we mention she's listening?

In between the L-word, which dropped around 20 times during the 10 or so minutes Strayhorn spoke, she spoke resoundingly generally about her campaign filings, which she characterized as "dotting our I's, crossing our T's," and meeting "all city requirements" should she decide to run. "I absolutely am humbled, certainly, with the folks urging me to run for mayor of this city," said Strayhorn. Asked by Newsdesk who those folks were, Strayhorn replied she was "listening to the people of Austin."

"I'm inspired, refreshed, and reassured" by the citizenry, Strayhorn said. Right around that time, the Austin Duck Adventures vehicle slowly drove up Sixth Street, the riders sounding their quacking duck kazoos at the assembled press and would-be candidate.

Listening? Really? guest Nov 14, 2008 - 12:57 pm
Carole, if you're really listening, try this one:

I didn't like you the first time you were mayor, I didn't like you when you were a Democrat, and I sure as hell didn't like you when you were a Republican.

Why on earth would anybody in Austin want to vote for this idea-free celebrity politician?

Isn't it customary to commit to running before you ask people for money? It's disengenous to file campaign treasurer(s) and then be coy about your intentions.

While listening is an important quality of leadership, solely using that as your basis for running is extraordinarily lame. We don't need another ego-driven, yet passive mayor...we need accountable, responsive leadership!

Nice timing on the quacking...

"listening to the people of Austin."

That would be a first!

You mean listening to the #$%$#&% that have been putting cash in your pockets for years.

Not the "people" of Austin.

Like you listened to the people of Austin when they told you that live music could become a huge economic boom to the city of Austin. Substitute "special interest" instead of "people" if you want to be honest about anything. Or just say you are running, and open up that hidden bank account.

On the bright side... Deb Nov 17, 2008 - 01:37 pm
Her "listening" is one step above "the appearance of listening" that Leffingwell committed to working on last spring.

Please Deb, don't support Lee guest Nov 19, 2008 - 09:07 am
Deb,

Please don't support Leffingwell, many of us would like him to win.

Thanx!!!
