Recycle Those Campaign Signs

We'll barely have time to recover from next week's primary before the May municipal elections will be upon us. In fact, we've already started seeing campaign signs for that election pop up. After the ballots have been cast, the city would like to see those campaign signs get recycled.

CAMPAIGN RECYCLE ‘08

A pilot program to recycle municipal election campaign signs

(Austin, TX) Candidates can make the campaign trail a little greener in upcoming elections. Council member hopefuls can volunteer to join Campaign Recycle ’08, a pilot program coordinated by the City of Austin Solid Waste Services Department to recycle campaign signs from the May 10, 2008, City Council elections.

It will be easy to spot an eco-friendly campaign sign, with a participating candidate’s signs displaying a specially–designed recycling logo [see illustration]. All qualified signs will be recycled by Cycled Plastics — a local Austin company – including metal sign stakes.

Results from this voluntary pilot program will be analyzed and a final report will be issued on the feasibility of collecting and recycling campaign signs in future elections.

Candidates interested in participating may contact Deborah Salzman at 974-9038 or e-mail: deborah.salzman@ci.austin.tx.us for details, sign specifications, and the Campaign Recycle ’08 logo in a print-ready digital format. Information about drop-off locations for recycling campaign signs will be distributed to candidates before the run-off election.
