SBOE Primary: Down With Dunbar

University of Texas math professor Lorenzo Sadun announced Monday he's withdrawing from the race for the State Board of Education District 10 seat, presumably clearing the Democratic primary field for Judy Jennings. Sadun said he's come to "respect and admire" Jennings on the campaign trail. "Much as I would like to serve on the SBOE," he said, "I cannot allow my own ambition to stand in the way of Judy's bringing necessary change to a dysfunctional board." District 10 includes northern Travis County, which has been poorly represented by the fundamentalist Christian and rabidly anti-Obama bent of current SBOE member Cynthia Dunbar, R-Crazytown (actually, she's from Richmond). "Dr. Sadun and I share the outrage of many voters that our current representative on the State Board of Education is someone who calls public education 'a subtly deceptive tool of perversion,'" said Jennings. But while the Democrats were hoping to unseat Dunbar, they've apparently lost their chance – Dunbar seems to have unseated herself. The Quorum Report reported on Wednes­day that Dunbar "appears to have told supporters she will not run for a second term on the board and likely will be replaced on the ballot by Austin intellectual property attorney Brian Russell, who currently serves on the State Republican Executive Committee." Round Rock ISD teacher Rebecca Osborne has also filed to be on the Republican ballot.
