Drunk on Civic Pride

Announcing the Official Drink of Austin

BY CLAUDIA ALARCÓN

The annual search for "the Official Drink of Austin" took place on Monday, Aug. 27, at the Belmont. For the first time, Downtown bars and restaurants were invited to participate along with Austin's finest hotel bars. The result of this great development was that the competition was unbelievably close, the presentations elaborate, and the drinks more creative than ever. Each one of the five finalist drinks, chosen blindly by the judges from a list of 11 recipes, looked intriguing on paper. But nothing quite prepared us for the amazing display of talent from all the finalists.

The Renaissance Hotel's staff prepared a delicious and refreshing concoction of muddled fresh figs and blackberries, shaken with a good dose of Tito's Vodka, a splash of simple syrup, and a squeeze of fresh lime, garnished on the side with two cute cherry tomatoes filled with boursin cheese.

The ladies from the three-time defending champion Four Seasons dazzled the crowd with incredible costumes à la the Ronettes and their soulful singing while they mixed their Batini Silhouette: an unusual and delicious cocktail of vanilla and nectarine-infused Tito's mixed with Port and white cranberry juice.

Moonshine Patio Bar & Grill followed with the Freetail, a very well-thought-out, superb cocktail incorporating Tito's, Paula's Texas Lemon, fresh blueberry purée, black currant nectar, and guanabana nectar.

The Belmont's bartenders dazzled like Tom Cruise with shaker acrobatics to serve a tasty version of their pineapple-based Belmontini.

In the end, the contest went to Lamberts, whose staff prepared its Tito's dirty martini with olives and pickled jalapeños and delivered it with a hilarious skit that had the crowd roaring. Next time you go to Lamberts, be sure to ask for the Batini.

(Note: At the request of two judges who shall remain anonymous, Moonshine will add the Freetail to their drink menu.)
