Asia Fest Mini Film Fest

BY KIMBERLEY JONES

The Motel

Former director of the Austin Asian Film Festival Masashi Niwano has added one "A" and one "F" to his résumé with his newly formed and similarly minded organization, the Austin Asian American Film Foundation. AAAFF has big plans for an October film festival, but in the meantime, it's sponsoring an abbreviated film fest, as part of the all-day Asia Fest celebration this Saturday, May 3 (see Community Listings). A number of shorts will be shown, starting at 2pm, followed by two features: Derek Shimoda's lighthearted doc about everybody's favorite after-dinner fortune in a snack, The Killing of a Chinese Cookie (screens at 4pm), and Michael Kang's well-received coming-of-age feature, The Motel, which premiered at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival (screens at 7pm).

The Asia Fest mini film fest takes place Saturday, May 3, at the Asian American Resource Center grounds (8301 Cameron). For more information, visit www.aaaff.org.
