Obama Takes Convention and Texas

At midnight on Sunday, before the second boot of the Texas two-step had really hit the floor, Texans for Obama were calling it: Sen. Barack Obama had taken Texas. The numbers will not be confirmed until the state convention in Austin in June, but projecting from early county caucus results, the Obama campaign was estimating an eventual 38 national convention delegates to Hillary Clinton's 29 (other sources have estimated 37-30). If these results hold and there's no shifting among delegates (still possible), Obama's nine-delegate caucus lead more than overcomes Clinton's 65-61 primary-vote win, giving him a narrow overall Texas lead of 99-94.

Of the big cities, only El Paso went for Clinton: In a near-blowout, she took 164 of the county's 182 delegates. She also dominated in Senate District 20, covering the majority-Hispanic counties of Brooks, Jim Wells, Nueces, and much of Hidalgo. But the major urban centers were Obama strongholds. While there were no clean sweeps, his delegate count outstripped Clinton's in numerically vital counties like William­son, Tarrant, and Dallas. Even in these areas, Obama didn't have it all his own way: In the section of Harris in SD 6, Clinton won 81-65. But in neighboring SD 13, covering part of Harris and Fort Bend, Obama swept 313 of the 399 delegates up for grabs.
