Texas Platters

BY AUSTIN POWELL

The Laughing

Tiger Cry

When faced with personal, unavoidable failure, it's best to ease the awkwardness with an amusing aside or a whimsical witticism. Such is the case with Austin's latest blog bust, the Laughing, a derisive local quartet that disguises its mediocrity and melodrama through a series of ill-fated gimmicks – an animal fetish, neon signs, matching turquoise face paint and white denim vests – that would make even David Bowie cringe. The band's debut EP, Tiger Cry, is a six-song cycle loosely based around their stuffed mascot, Svan ("Lions Can't Fight," "Wait Until He Roars"), that guffaws with brooding synths and generic guitars to create goofy dance rock. Along with Logan Middleton's vocals, whose gaiety recalls the annoying half of Wolf Parade, the Laughing falters most with its ridiculous instrumentation, especially on the album's painful, seven-minute title track, which uses the baritone sax and theremin like props in a Siegfried & Roy show. Seriously, the joke's over.

Is this even a record review? guest Apr 05, 2007 - 01:37 pm
You really have to question the integrity of an article that discusses what a band happens to wear on stage or what prop they might perform with. This seems more of personal rant than it does music journalism.

So your, like, not really into music, huh? Luther Apr 05, 2007 - 02:04 pm
The fact that someone who is payed to review music is this naive about the genius of The Laughing, their unpretentious thematic elements, woven into innovative non-linear dance-wave, and tempered by outright and savage talent, I think says loads about the integrity of this reviewer, and maybe this publication. I mean, you know, if your one of those Guitar Center, Sting fans or whatever, I understand your not getting this record, but maybe you shouldn't be reviewing music in Austin. So just go watch another Earth Wind and Fire DVD and leave the innovative music to people who understand these things. Or maybe they pulled you over from writing those ambiguous hooker adds for the back section, in which case, I'd stick with the bullshitting there.

Seriously math_is_fun Apr 06, 2007 - 03:40 pm
When faced with a paucity of original thought, and an inability to write cogently or on topic, many young writers choose to employ sweeping generalizations. Such is the case with Mr. Powell's review. Do white vests and silly mascots not belong in "goofy dance rock"? If not, then where? Perhaps critics should stick to the music, and perhaps Mr. Powell should loosen up.

Pobrecito... guest Apr 06, 2007 - 04:03 pm
Austin? Go take some headache medicine, drink a tall glass of water, and take a nap, OK? And THEN try and write a review. Like, you know, a real one? Thanks!

what a dick!!!!!!!! obi one bitch Apr 07, 2007 - 11:59 am
the chronicle needs to find a better person to wright cd reviews!!!! plus i think he likes to put cock in his mouth.....

Why would the Chronicle Publish this? Theo Huckstable Apr 07, 2007 - 04:04 pm
This is the type of shit you would expect to read on some college kids personal blog on myspace. This does not belong in the local paper under the heading "Record Reviews". C'mon Chronicle, I know you want to catch up to Pitchfork but it aint gonna happen. You have to know how to properly criticize first. Plus maybe try waiting till the local band you are bashing has been around more than six months and actually records an album.

Funnily enough... Bryan Misprint Apr 09, 2007 - 11:45 am
I don't really disagree with a lot of the points in this review. But I come to the complete opposite conclusion of how good it is (it slays). But if The Laughing were to get a 3 or 4 star review in The Chronicle, I'd probably think the dudes in white were doing something wrong.

This is why the Chronicle is irrelevant in the current music scene. Nice try, but they just dont get it.

Right on the Money Tylenol Apr 16, 2007 - 04:32 pm
I couldn't agree more. Which, sadly, I can't say very often about Chron reviews these days... Luckily, this one is appropriate in that it presents The Laughing's music as they do: as merely a supplement to their self-aware, hyper-ironic shtick. Unfortunately, even if these boys wore black suits and Beatle boots, at this point their music is still an unabashed off-brand rehash of other dance-pop/rock acts with more listenable catalogs. This is pop culture cannibalism of the worst kind and bands like this that make us the laughing-stock of our peer cities, replete with the prima dona posturing and almost tangible lack of originality that are the main reasons that Austin's legitimate Indie-acts have so much trouble achieving and maintaining credibility at a national level. Based on the comments on this thread, this has obviously touched a vein, and I'm willing to bet for at least half of these posts that is a result of a friendship or acquaintance with one or more members of the band (which I, coincidentally, share). But if, as some of you are implying, The Laughing is one the of standard-bearers or somehow representative of our current scene you need to pull your mussy little scenester heads out of your asses. If you're going to come out with guns a-blazin', at least throw down for a band with some substance.

Tylenol? Advil Apr 16, 2007 - 09:29 pm
So what lame band did you say you play with again? To blame the laughing, who are pretty much a brand new band in town, (im not even sure if they have even played a show outside of austin ) for being why your band/friend's band doesnt get any attention is pretty pathetic and only suggests you/they are probebly boring to watch and take youselves way too seriously. They are practically unknown, i really dont think anyone is judging you to harshly for their actions or musical output. Schtick isnt really my thing either but there really isnt that much of a gimmick to what these guys are doing. They wear matching 'warriors'-style outfits when onstage and perform their songs like any other rock band. Where is the prima donna posturing you speak of? You mean to say they are actually more schticky than the black angels? or ghostland? or hell even brothers and sisters? Last i saw the octopus project didnt exactly perform in their pajamas. I dont hear anyone complaining there. Its all part of the show and the visual aesthetic of live music. As far as the music being a rehash, I cant remember ever seeing a band or artist in austin that DIDNT sound like a series of influences and musical references mashed together. (again see list above and add voxtrot spoon zychos and just about everyone else who gets any praise in this town) I am willing to bet you couldnt name one either, at least not one that is listenable on any enjoyable level. I do actually like most of these bands but come on. As far as peer cities go, every city has lots of bad music. stop crying.

hoo boy Tylenol Apr 17, 2007 - 02:04 pm
Read between the lines, "Advil". Why the hell are you so worked up? You're entitled to your opinion, as I am to mine. My opinion is that Austin has too many bands that are long on cheap gimmickry and showmanship and short on substance. The Laughing have an amusing premise: white denim vests, crying tigers, etc. It could work, but their music can't support their image. Around the Austin scene people talk about the funny way they dress, not their songs. I've been to a few shows, and the overwhelming consensus is that these guys should spend less time in the fitting room and more time in the practice studio. Also, drop the ad hominem attacks and learn how to spell, for chrissakes. It weakens your position.

mmm substance ...... same as before Apr 18, 2007 - 03:50 am
Thats fine, you don't like them, you move on. Thats what i do, i choose to surround myself with music I DO like. My whole issue with reviews like this one along with your outlandish comments about austin being the laughing stock of our peer cities, comes down to the simple fact that somewhere deep down i feel that bashing any band negatively for what they are doing creatively tends to be a very screwy enterprise. Especially when its such a new, young band and in such a public manner in a small community like Austin. Hence MY involvement in this thread. I'm not saying we should kiss everyone's asses, or that there isn't room for criticism because there always is. However, if the overwhelming consensus truly is as you and austin powell would suggest, that this band sucks, then who cares, their sucking will get them nowhere anyway, right? This type of band shit-talking is far worse for the music scene than showmanship could ever be. Save that shit for the shins.

Also, here is a nice little ad hominem attack for you, you pretentious piece of shit, this is a god damned internet forum, nobody really cares about spelling! And if you really spent the time going to a 'few shows', possibly 'acquainting' yourself with 'one or more members" of the band, reading their press and bad review, then signing on and reading all of the comments people had to say about them in their defense, feel the need to comment and participate (twice so far!), all about a band you STRONGLY feel sucks and lacks substance, then you are a big fucking loser! No matter how you spell it out.

ahh Opinions.... Theo Huckstable Apr 18, 2007 - 03:07 pm
Either way, the beauty is we all have the right to choose what we like. Whether its the kind of music you make, what you wear or what you listen to. I agree bashing bands is like bashing people just cause you dont like what they think or do. A good music scene comes from people supporting what they like not trashing what they dont.

"...somewhere deep down i feel that bashing any band negatively for what they are doing creatively tends to be a very screwy enterprise. Especially when its such a new, young band and in such a public manner in a small community like Austin."

You're right. You're absolutely right. No one should express negative opinions of bands that are young, in small communities, or, hell, anyone who does anything creatively, period. I don't know about you guys, but I've learned a valuable lesson here.

ha! same asshole as above Apr 23, 2007 - 02:54 am
I am so glad you still read this! you almost made my night!!! I like how you really got my post too! You should write for the chronicle! I think you would fit in nicely....

p.s. How is the new shins album?
