Aztex return from England a few players lighter
By Nick Barbaro, Fri., Oct. 30, 2009
It can be a cruel game. In their final home game of the season on Friday, the St. Edward's women outshot Newman 32-5, had 15 corner kicks to the Jets' one, and earned an overtime penalty kick. But they couldn't find the net, and Newman snuck one in against the run of play with 40 seconds left in the second overtime, handing the Hilltoppers their first conference loss of the season. Their game at 15th-ranked Incarnate Word this Friday will decide the conference championship.
The St. Edward's men are peaking at the right time – though just 5-7-2 overall, they're in first place in the Heartland Conference, with a five-game conference win streak in which they've outscored their opponents 11-1. Catch their final two home games of the season: hosting Newman, 3pm Friday, Oct. 30, and Texas-Permian Basin, 1pm Sunday, Nov. 1.
The Austin Aztex announced Monday that Djorn Buchholz will take over as their new CEO, effective Nov. 9. Buchholz is well regarded around the USL as general manager of the Minnesota Thunder. Aztex President Phil Rawlins said he's pleased to get someone of Buchholz's experience to "help us move into the next phase of our growth."
The Aztex are back from their England tour, but Jamaican defender Kieron Bernard and English striker Eddie Johnson have stayed behind to explore the local job market. Bernard has gotten looks from clubs in England, Spain, Holland, and Italy; Johnson may well sign with an English pro team after his impressive season here. Goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo reportedly also attracted some interest.
When the dust settled on the CONCACAF Champions League group stage, only one MLS team survived to the final eight knockout round. Mexican teams won all four groups, with the Columbus Crew joining teams from Honduras, Panama, and Guatemala as runners-up qualifiers. The quarterfinals take place in February.
European Champions League game day four (out of six) is this week; Fox networks will again be showing five games live, Tuesday and Wednesday at 1:30.
