ABIA: Barbara Jordan Statue
"What the people want is very simple – they want an America as good as its promise." The powerful portrait in bronze – of the first black woman elected to the Texas Senate and the first black woman from a Southern state to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives – shows a woman thoughtful repose, perhaps pondering the very ideals stated above. Barbara Jordan is a Texas original. Our ABIA terminal is proudly named for her, and this is a lifelike tribute to an inspiring life.

ABIA: Escalators
This logic may be obvious to regular ABIA travelers, but here's the deal:

UP: There are two escalators in Baggage Claim that run parallel to the large front panels of glass in the front of the terminal – one in front of each of the east and west car rental wings, each emerging into the respective Concourse ticketing areas. They only go up.

DOWN: There are two escalators at the ends of the secure gate areas, on the Concourse, flowing south to north, emerging in Baggage Claim. These only go down. (Folks in the nonsecure Concourse areas may access these as well.)

Whilst awaiting that elusive, last, slow-to-hit-the-turnstile bag at the claim carousel, feel free to wander over and enjoy some of our world-class "Texas-Friendly" courtesy from the nice folks at the Information Center. It's staffed mostly by volunteers, like affable retirees Ray and Linda Lester: "We're available, and it's fun. It's people business, plus, we like to travel a lot!" They can help you find pretty much everything you need within ABIA or can direct you to any number of maps, resources, and periodicals (including yours truly, The Austin Chronicle) to guide you on your way as you venture out to explore our town.
