Black Cobra
Emo's, Monday, Aug 27
With all these “Black”-monikered bands today, San Francisco’s Black Cobra actually deserves to have the color in its name. Last year’s debut, Bestial (At a Loss Recordings), veered blindly between straight-up sludge and venomous thrash, with a special emphasis on charred, brain-caving heaviness. Did we mention all this throttling comes from two dudes? A follow-up, Feather and Stone, drops soon. Iron Age, Livin’, and the Roller crunch first. – Audra Schroeder

Rose’s Pawn Shop
Continental Club, Monday, Aug 27

With Dale Watson on the road, two sides of the alt.country coin take his place. Houston’s Miss Leslie & Her Juke-Jointers start the night with some traditional hard stuff. Miss Leslie, who’s been compared to Tammy Wynette and Connie Smith, sure has the pipes for filling the dance floor. L.A. quintet Rose’s Pawn Shop follows with a blast of punk and bluegrass that might make you forget it’s Monday night. – Jim Caligiuri
