Soapdish

1991 Directed by Michael Hoffman. Starring Sally Field, Whoopi Goldberg, Elisabeth Shue, Robert Downey, Cathy Moriarty, Kevin Kline.

REVIEWED By Kathleen Maher, Fri., May 31, 1991

Field expands on her near the edge housewife in Steel Magnolias to create this TV soap queen. What we want is All About Eve, what we get is Gidget with PMS. But she eventually finds an acceptable area of compromise, and is ably balanced by Goldberg and Shue. Kline does his own share of screeching and also camping it up in grand style is Moriarty and Downey, Jr. At first Soapdish seems good-natured but stupid, but as the private, public and TV lives of these characters begin to unravel and tangle, on the small screen and off, it turns into a genuinely funny comedy.
