MUSIC recommended events Now in its 10th year, YXSB has found its identity as a dysfunctional noise-rock circus, with two nights at Chain Drive this year offering mostly locals: Telepathik Friend, Many Birthdays, Book of Shadows, Damp Heat, No Mas Bodas, the Waco Girls, Clear Spot, Low Red Center, and more. Monday at Plush, any hearing you might have hoarded will be washed away courtesy of Aurora Plastics Company, ST 37, Xathax, Zorch, and a padded room of others. – Audra Schroeder Dallas’ gospel family gets down with Austin’s howler. That guy who did “Babylon” and Willie’s biggest fan pair up. SIXTEEN DELUXEMohawk, Saturday, Mar 13 In the nascent post-grunge days of Red River noise, Sixteen Deluxe’s original lineup of guitarists Carrie Clark and Chris “Frenchie” Smith, drummer Lyman Hardy, and bassist Jeff Copas nailed the mid-1990s with heavy-bottomed, neon-glow fuzz rock. ’Twas a grand moment for local music, a shift away from musical sensibilities informed by the 1980s and toward something more blissful and loud. The group’s first kiss came in 1995 on Trance Syndicate debut Backfeed Magnetbabe, followed by 1998 Warner Bros. debut Emits Showers of Sparks, before they blew out the candles in 2000. A decade later, the quartet – Steven Hall succeeded Bryan Bowden on drums after Hardy left – celebrates its reunion in Deluxe style with Bunkhaus Records’ release of the band’s initial demos, Year One, and South by Southwest gigs. WILL JOHNSON'S BASEBALL PAINTINGS
Will Johnson is a man of many talents. Known primarily as the driving force behind Centro-Matic and South San Gabriel and for having played alongside Jim James, Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis, and M. Ward in last year’s highly touted supergroup Monsters of Folk, he’s also a well-regarded visual artist. In his folkie Howard Finster-esque paintings, Johnson pays homage to baseball greats both known and not-so-known, focusing on Negro League players. This exhibit is similar in theme and style to those of fellow local artist/musician Tim Kerr, who concentrates largely on folk, jazz, and blues legends. In case there are questions regarding his credibility on the field, Johnson plays a mean second base for Waterloo Records’ softball team. Bringing the baseball theme full circle, hot dogs from Frank will be served at the opening. Show runs through April 30. Opening: Thu., March 11, 7pm. IF+D, 208 Colorado, 469-0870. Free.
