1997 Austin Music Awards

introduction by Margaret Moser

The 1996-97 Music Poll in Review

The Awards show round-up last issue made a very salient point: That in 1996, no one band emerged from Austin's edgier contingent to dominate the scene, and that may have contributed to why listeners seemed to revert to traditional Austin sounds. With all due respect to Storyville, it was a good year for the blues.

By traditional, I mean that the singer-songwriters and country artists who have long been the staple of Austin's music but fall in and out of fashion are hot once again. Also strong is the Steamboat-based network of rock bands: Vallejo, Pushmonkey, Sister 7, Ugly Americans, Lisa Tingle, Billy White, and Breedlove. For sheer effect, though, it's tough to beat the blues: Witness Storyville's staggering, record-breaking sweep of awards.

One of the more striking categories to emerge has been Acoustic Guitar. A couple of years ago it began to rival Electric Guitar as the guitar category; we began listing up to 15 acoustic players. This year, readers noted 15 of their favorite electric guitarists but found 20 acoustic players just as noteworthy. Another category that more than doubled its responses was the Best Critic category, where Andy Langer and Michael Corcoran duked it out but ended up tied. Still, the two each had more than twice as many votes as the third place winner.

This sort of after-the-fact, ain't-hindsight-grand? analyses start to wear thin after a while, which is why the essay questions are sometimes a better barometer of the public's interest. Yeah, there are the predictable "you suck" replies (wow, the amount of effort coming to that conclusion must have been staggering!) but there are an equal number of thoughtful comments -- wish we had room to run them. One, however, stands out this year for me. Under "Worst Thing in Austin Music in 1997," a reader wistfully wrote, I still miss Stevie Ray. Yeah, me too.

-- Margaret Moser
