The 14th Annual Austin Music Awards
Introduction
In 1996, The Austin
Chronicle's music poll drew a record number of ballot entries -- due in no
small part to the Chronicle's website. Voting was up about 20% while stuffing
was proportionately down, possibly because Retarted Elf broke up, suggests the
ornery Poll Answer Lady.
But if anything can be surmised from the winners of this year's Austin Music
Awards, it's that while change is good and will always come, tradition and
quality are very much on the minds of the readers. As the poll winners of
recent years have been younger and younger, it is interesting to see the strong
return of Joe Ely, an artist who dominated the poll for years, as well as the
almost unshakeable hold Toni Price has on her category. (Acoustic guitar was
another unexpectedly hot category, as a result of Price's popularity.)
As the poll expands to reflect the changing face of local music, it is also
interesting to "track" voting trends. The sheer number of votes Ian Moore
received for "Band of the Year," "Musician of the Year," "Best Electric
Guitar," and "Best Rock Band" also swung categories for "Best Poster" and the
tie for "Best Video." The increase in awareness of local video more than
doubled from last year, and it's easy to link that to the emergence of the
Austin Music Network. Regional acts also got more votes than ever, with Dash
Rip Rock, the Toadies, and Deep Blue Something garnering enough attention to
warrant consideration of a "Best Regional Band" slot next year.
Upsets abounded. The tie between KLBJ-FM and 107.1 KGSR in "Best Radio
Station" reflects the expanded votership, too, as KLBJ has played Ian Moore
heavily while he was just added to KGSR's playlist. The "Critic" category,
traditionally a poorly voted slot, had higher numbers this year but you have to
look at all the names to see what happened: the hold Don McLeese had on it was
diminished by the appearance of Michael Corcoran back on the scene, and the
votes were split. Winner Andy Langer, though, positioned himself over the last
year in almost every medium, and established a high profile that paid off in
votes.
It's good to take the poll with a little grain of salt, too. 50 categories can
daunt even the critics but leave it to the readers to deal with it: Under "Best
Roadshow," one wit nominated the "Zilker Park Christmas Lights." On another
ballot, the "Horns" category got a vote for the Longhorn Marching Band.
In the end, though, it's list after list of names. Yes, those first-place
winners are impressive but it's only in the context of the accompanying names
that you get a real sense of the breadth and depth of the musicianship in this
town. Check the "Band of the Year" category; where else but Austin would the
lush electro-pop of Sixteen Deluxe wedge itself between the hardscrabble
rootsiness of Joe Ely and the sublime honky-tonk blues of Toni Price? Where
else but Austin does the smoky lounge-jazz of 8 1/2 Souvenirs squeeze between
Monte Warden's heartbreak country and Little Sister's funky rock? Where else
indeed.
