The Glass Family

Named after J.D. Salinger’s mythical family, local quintet the Glass Family is just as quirky as Franny and Zooey, if only a bit more subdued. Vocalist and guitarist Michael Winningham formed the band in 2002 with his friend from first grade, drummer Tony Daugherty. After some prerequisite lineup changes, the Glass Family fell into its own in 2004 with bassist Jeremy Gomez (Mineral, the Gloria Record), keyboardist Frank Alexander, and guitarist Brian Hubbard (also of the Gloria Record), crafting a melodic flow of verse and texture. Debut album Sleep Inside This Wheel (I Eat Records) broke out the next year and brought with it a local fan base. R.E.M., Wilco, and Grandaddy, mixed with a touch of summer pop and orchestral turns, reached out from their music, and in 2006, that proved worthy of a slew of South by Southwest gigs and a tour. The Family is currently deciding down which road they'd like to travel: CD, MP3s, or none of the above. If new demos are any indication, the Glass Family has become tighter, louder, and more aggressive. – Darcie Stevens

Glass Family, Lemurs, Golden Bear
Austin songwriters are sharpening their pens to a prophetic point, and the Glass Family is case in point. Michael Winningham’s lyrical prowess shines on the Fam’s Sleep Inside This Wheel, while Lemurs’ fine-wine dance-pop finally pops the cork off of its debut LP. Golden Bear throws a little collective jubilation in the stew. A night for words to shine, but pack dance shoes, too.

Local pop attack with openers Parks & Wildlife.

Quien es, Boom! CD Release
The buzz over Austin’s Quien es, Boom! has hissed like a slow and simmering live wire, and now with the new Cast Your Burdens Aside, the group has found their spark. The sixpiece recorded in Chicago with indie guru Jeremy Lemos, and that trademark Chi-boogie warmth is all over it, from the electro twinge and dancey beats to sharp guitar work. This stellar local show is rounded out with openers Brothers and Sisters and headliners the Glass Family.

I Love You but I've Chosen Darkness
According to I Love You but I’ve Chosen Darkness, Fear is on Our Side. The local purveyors of ghostly, black-clad atmospherics are unleashing their debut Secretly Canadian release next month, and much like their 2003 EP, it’s sure to have indie kids trembling. Not so much with fear, but with the unbridled desire to leave asymmetrical haircuts behind and just dance. Locals Horse + Donkey kick things off with angular slabs of pop, and the melodies of the Glass Family keep it tight.

The Glass Family, the Black, Zookeeper
Sweet lullabies and solid songwriting from Austin’s Sleepy quintet.

Free Week, Part 2!
After a near-week of rock & roll debauchery, we near the finish line with a second dose of super local, utterly fun, and totally free shows. Now is not the time for a breather. Friday night is fast and furious with the emo metal of At All Cost, D.C.-inspired hardcore of America Is Waiting, mindfuck heavyosity of Cardinale, Vise Versa’s popcore, and the clanging sludge of SteerS on the outside stage. Inside, Emo’s opens up the garage door with the Stepbrothers, Rev. Ray Pride’s Crack Pipes, the Ugly Beats’ go-go-rama, and the electric sliding Nervous Exits. Saturday night, local bigwigs I Love You but I’ve Chosen Darkness hit the outside stage, out of the studio and into the night. Local college rockers Zykos support with the flashing Lemurs and Strokesian Lord Henry. Inside, What Made Milwaukee Famous gain a little stardom of their own with the beautiful Glass Family, the Fall Collection’s power pop, and brand-new rockers Crash Gallery. Sunday is all about the ass with dance-punkers Things That Go Pop!, Loxsly’s squealing swirl, a big poppy Magic Surprise, and Tacks, the Boy Disaster. And don’t give us any BS about having to work in the morning, because Monday’s even better. The Awesome Cool Dudes/Tuxedo Killers conglomerate When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth throw down proggy with Blonde Redhead followers AM Syndicate, the Chapters’ Eighties jam, and the “punk rock” of the Midgetmen. Momentum, baby. Tuesday is hardcore night with the tightass Games & Theory, Bitter Tongues, and Triumph of Gnomes, while Wednesday is for the truly excessive and strong of liver. Chicken Ranch Records messes the barnyard with the White Ghost Shivers, Willie Heath Neal, and travelin’ man John Schooley & His One Man Band. We feel your pain. Buck up, SXSW is right around the corner.

The Glass Family CD Release
Watching a band go from sloppy newborn to tightly wound, indie rock greatness will make anyone proud, and with the release of the Glass Family’s debut, Sleep Inside This Wheel (I Eat Records), local showgoers are beaming. Michael Winningham’s delicate voice leads his Family members through perfectly structured tales of loneliness and exuberance beneath layers of softly rolling guitar. Local faves Zykos and instrumental warriors Cue open the show with Waxploitation! spinning funk and soul between and after. All wrapped up in a bow.

Sound Team, Mazarin
As Sound Team’s Work EP drops Tuesday, the local psych-pop sixpiece makes an all-too-rare club appearance with Philly quartet Mazarin, who dives into a MBV/Shinsian stew with this year’s acclaimed We’re Already There (I and Ear). Austin’s Glass Family opens with tracks off their upcoming debut, Sleep Inside This Wheel (I Eat Records). A match made in California.

What Made Milwaukee Famous, the Glass Family
When What Made Milwaukee Famous re-entered Emo’s orbit two weeks ago, they were a new band, rocking out with the passion of a million Pages and Pollards. The hiatus did them well, providing a full house off of which to bounce all their brand new indie rock paraphernalia. We’ve got money down on a nationwide coup. The Glass Family sets the stage right with less-anxious melodies of love and forgiveness underneath lullaby harmonies. The Lord Henry opens.

At All Cost Benefit/I Eat Records CD Release
The walls are coming down. Fighting off the cliques, Emo’s is taking a handful of genres and smooshing them together like Play Doh. Saturday night finds friends raising funds to replace At All Cost’s stolen gear. The heavy-handers headline the show with the Rise’s Cory Kilduff and Jimmy Welsh showing off their latest electronic project, Ocelot Mthrfckrs, the multilayered hardcore of Games & Theory, Visitors, Pompeii, and Oceanus. I Eat Records celebrates the release of their debut compilation Monday night with the Glass Family’s luscious, climatic pop headlining. Thor & Friends, Shearwater’s Jonathan Meiburg, and a reunited Orange Mothers are preceded by head Mother Ethan Azarian solo. Okkervil River’s Will Sheff contributes his poetry, and the Handsome Charlies, the Casting Couch, Fluffers Union, Hitchhike, and Fine Fifteen are all in on the party. Pick your poison.

The Glass Family
Austin’s Glass Family are masters at layering subtle, thickening tracks over rocking rhythms, and this show away from the strip will be no less dreamy. Previewing the band’s heavily anticipated full-length, Michael Winningham’s vox flutters on par with Tweedy/Stipe. Joining are fellow locals and rockers 1986 (formerly Gigantic) releasing their new, hot-shit CD. Will Rhodes opens.

Cue, Early Day Miners
The Austinites in Cue play soothing, emotive violin/piano/guitar crescendos that breed chills and shivers alike. Who needs vocals when strings turn on the waterworks? Somewhat of an Explosions in the Sky with strings, their passionately dark serenades entice even the most emotional rockers. Midwesterners Early Day Miners support, with a touch of Eighties goth that we all know and love, and locals the Glass Family and New York's Chris Brokaw open.

I Love You but I've Chosen Darkness
Local sensations I Love You but I’ve Chosen Darkness have a lot to celebrate this holiday season. The band has garnered more acclaim and recognition in the last year than most acts do their entire career. What better way to end 2004 than playing the venue that helped launch them? Local indie rock will be flowing, with an indoor/outdoor show that includes the spacey Experimental Aircraft and experimental ST 37 inside. Voxtrot and the Glass Family open outside.

The Rosebuds
The Rosebuds found its genesis when Ivan Howard and Kelly Crisp met as coeds in Wilmington, N.C. They joined the Merge family and last year released Make Out, which alternates between clanging, limb-thrashing pop punk reminiscent of a great big puppy that doesn’t know its strength and poignantly mellow breakup songs. The pair is doing one last great push across the country before hibernating for the winter (perhaps doing some sledding?) and preparing new songs for a spring EP and a second LP. J.D. Salinger fans the Glass Family open along with reflective rockers Quiet, Lovely out of Waco and the enigmatic Shells.
