PAST RECOMMENDED SHOWS:
10/26/08 @ Austin Music Hall
Rise Against
“Melodic hardcore”: historic soundtrack to an underground youth movement or fluff for the hardcore set? Chicago powerhouses Rise Against and the Alkaline Trio report; you decide. L.A.’s Thrice is moving on – the band’s new double disc, The Alchemy Index Vols. III & IV: Air & Earth, often sounds like moshy My Morning Jacket – while Jersey boys the Gaslight Anthem are likened to punk rock Springsteen.
11/16/07 @ Stubb's
Mewithoutyou
Last time MWY opened for two unworthy acts on the big stage at Stubb’s – October 2005 – they left converts writhing in the balcony. Fugazi’s evangelical fever rages in this Philly fivepiece, their screams and two-guitar evisceration masking volcanic folk ratcheted up into the red from Okkervil River. At Emo’s, and most recently at a Parish potluck with best LP Brother, Sister (Tooth & Nail), the Weiss gang brought “The Dryness and the Rain.” Here, first thing – 30 minutes, tops – expect hellfire. Long Island pop punks Brand New and Orange County elementalists Thrice headline.
04/01/04 @ Emo's
California’s Thrice returns to Austin this summer with the sing-along ranks of Dashboard Confes-sional, but for now they’re paying a smaller-scale homage to Agent Orange and Weezer. A bit emo, a little hardcore, some might say mainscreamo. Touting last year’s Island Records release, The Artist in the Ambulance, Thrice has skater boys and bubblegum girls alike bopping and moshing. Touring with brothers-in-anguish Poison the Well and Darkest Hour, this 6pm, all-ages show is a teenage rite of spring.
11/08/03 @ Stubb's
Fronted by Claudio Sanchez, whose big hair belies his mellifluous vocals, Coheed and Cambria’s ambitious new In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 typifies a new wave of progressive emo, younger cousins to the more adventur-ous Mars Volta. Headlining this Stubb’s trilogy is the wildly popular Thursday, whose Island debut, War All the Time, sharpens their whimper-to-a-scream formula also preferred by fellow Island rookies and tourmates Thrice, who join the big leagues with their AFI-like The Artist in the Ambulance.
