03/25/06 @ The Glenn at the BackyardSam Bush/Bela Fleck
One of the most talented mandolin players of our day, Sam Bush hasn’t played in Austin in quite some time. A founding member of the New Grass Revival, he’s also known for mixing Bill Monroe, Bob Marley, and Mahavishnu John McLaughlin into a dizzying whole. His fans know to expect some whacked-out fun from Bush and band, who have a new album due from Sugar Hill Records this summer. Bela Fleck, Bush’s banjo parallel, and his Flecktones are reportedly re-energized after a year off the road. Their latest,
The Hidden Land (Columbia), continues their exploration of jazz, bluegrass, funk, classical, and other worldly sounds.

12/27/03 @ Saxon PubThe South Austin Jug Band is one of the hardest-working local outfits around. By gigging several nights a week all over Texas, they’ve coalesced into a nearly peerless ensemble. With chops to spare, SAJB jams, yet keeps the noodle factor to a minimum, and by covering Bob Wills and Walter Hyatt, they stay true to their roots. Omar & the Howlers, with more than 20 years of rough and tumble Texas blues under their belts, are gearing up for the February release of a new batch of rockin’ mojo titled
Boogie Man.

08/14/03 @ Threadgill's World HQLast year around this time, Austin music fans were just beginning to find out how good the South Austin Jug Band really was. They had just won the bluegrass competition at the Telluride (Colo.) Bluegrass Festival and their atypical mix of Texas standards (and should-be standards) and acoustic jams were really starting to crystallize. Then they lost their ace fiddle player, Warren Hood, son of Champ, but, as luck would have it, they managed to find Dennis Ludiker, who’s even better. Now they’re set to release their first proper studio album, and it does a great job of showing off their talent for incorporating the traditional with some out-there originals, as well as their outstanding musicianship and inspired interplay. Their last appearance under the tent at Threadgill’s was SRO, and this one promises to be even more special, so you should probably get there early.
