"From Balcony TV: Blues Mafia, from Austin Texas, bring back the cool with their smooth blend of honest-to-goodness blues and sultry soul. The overall sound conjures images of an intimate bar, with a hazy cloud of heat and smoke and a beautiful singer alternately purring and growling into the microphone. ..." more

The Daze CD Release
Just because Bandslam is open and in theatres doesn’t mean its stars in the Daze are sitting down to enjoy the attention. No, the teen trio is celebrating its good fortune by releasing a new CD, Straightjacket Hymns, at Antone’s. Produced by Rick del Castillo, the band’s debut effort of exuberant blues rock with Latino and pop flair is at the high end of Austin’s growing teen band movement. The Bubbles and Blues Mafia open.

Antone's 34th Anniversary
Like Austin City Limits, Antone’s remains a global brand that attracts seekers of (blues) truth and (blues) knowledge from the Mississippi Delta to Mali. While Clifford Antone (1949-2006) remains in spirit and name, this is the week to seek out sister Susan Antone. Friday, longtime club loyalist Robert Cray spins silk, while Saturday the Arc Angels summon the glory days of River City’s guitar gods. Sunday’s fundraiser for local voice Natalie Zoe stars funkateers T Bird & the Breaks, Joel Guzman & Sarah Fox, LZ Love, and more, but save your best psychedelic wishes for birthday boy Roky Erickson on Wednesday, blowing out the candles of his two-headed cake with Riverboat Gamblers and the Golden Boys. Thursday, the Alice Rose follows in his footsteps with a CD release of third-generation acid-pop. Pucker up, Susan.
02/21/09 @ Victory Grill
Tribute to Nina Simone
Eighteen months after her Champagne toast at Bass Concert Hall, Oct. 30, 2000, Nina Simone huffed off to that great protest in the sky. Chitlin’ Circuit stopover Victory Grill had a piano for the civil rights lioness all along, but this weekend hosts a local pride celebrating “The Rock.” Suzanna Choffel, Laura Scarborough, Jitterbug Vipers, the Blues Mafia, and more bare teeth and soul. $25.
