The Derailers

Tony Villanueva and Brian Hofeldt played together in a variety of bands in Portland, Ore., before Villanueva moved to Austin in 1990. Hofeldt followed in 1993, and soon after, the Derailers were born. Known for their Beatles-meets-Buck-Owens sound and sharp dress style, the band has gone through a number of personnel changes over the years with Hofeldt remaining the lone constant. By 1995, they were one of the biggest draws in Austin’s country scene, thanks to a popular Continental Club happy-hour gig and Live Tracks, more or less the band's live show, recorded on KUT's Sunday night LiveSet program. In 1996 they signed to local label Watermelon Records and released their debut LP, Jackpot. Reverb Deluxe, released jointly by Watermelon and Seymour Stein's resurrected Sire imprint, followed in 1997, and two years later they returned with Full Western Dress. By this point the lineup had shifted to include drummer Scott Matthews and bassist Ed Adkins, the band’s rhythm section to this day. They moved to Sony's Lucky Dog imprint for Here Come the Derailers in 2001 with a slicker version of their signature sound. After 2003’s Genuine, Villanueva left the band, and Hofeldt stepped to the forefront along with newly recruited steel guitarist Chris Schlotzhauer and pianist Sweet Basil McJagger. 2006 brought Soldiers of Love, which featured a more rock sound, but a return to their roots followed with 2007’s Under the Influence of Buck, a collection of songs made famous by Owens. – Jim Caligiuri

Buck Owens Birthday Tribute
Since 1991, Austin’s country music community has celebrated the birthday of its patron saint, Buck Owens, who would have been 78 on Sunday. It’s grown into a highly anticipated soiree, with surprise guests of all stripes and a glorious house band led by Casper Rawls and Tom Lewis. This year, the Derailers celebrate the release of a brand-new Owens tribute disc, and, of course, all proceeds benefit the Center for Child Protection. 8pm.

Broken Spoke 41st Anniversary
The bus that crashed through the back wall of the venerable dance hall is finally gone. That’s not a moment too soon for owner James White, hosting the 41st anniversary of the club’s opening. And with a lineup that includes Alvin Crow, Cornell Hurd, Dale Watson, Bruce Robison, the Derailers, Jeff Hughes, and Gary P. Nunn, the energy will be higher than the moon. Recent news of White’s wife Annetta’s recovery from a bout with cancer means the celebration will be even more joyous than usual. Pass the Lone Star, please.
11/18/04 @ Antone's
Doug Sahm Day
It’s tough to celebrate the death of our beloved Doug Sahm, but his glorious Tex-Mex roots rock lives. The third memorial tribute includes Shawn Sahm, Augie Meyers, Speedy Sparks, Louie Ortega, Ernie Durawa, Texas Mavericks with Alvin Crow, Little Joe y la Familia, Troy Campbell, the Derailers, the Lucky Tomblin Band, Ernie Garibay & Cats Don’t Sleep, Bill Kirchen, Ed Burleson, and Dahebegebees. Attend the show, by all means, but don’t forget people are trying to get Billy Joel in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame before our man. Music Memorial Benefit
You may have gotten a phone call from your friendly neighborhood firefighters on this one, and for once, it was a phone campaign worth waging. In honor of the Austin Firefighters Union and 9/11 heroes everywhere, a host of local musical he-roes take the Stubb’s outdoor stage, including Jimmie Vaughan, Marcia Ball, Reckless Kelly, the Derailers, the Weary Boys, Toni Price, George DeVore, Chaparral, and more. Proceeds benefit the Red Cross and the Texas Burn Society.
08/26/03 @ La Zona Rosa
As part of the fallout from the statewide budget crunch, Texas Folklife Resources, the organization that keeps the state?s wide variety of tradition and culture alive, has lost most of its funding. They?re holding a series of benefits to try and keep afloat, including this night of Accordion Kings and guests. Squeeze-box royalty Mingo Saldivar, the best con-junto player not named Jimenez, will be joined by the honky-tonk sounds of the Derailers, hotshot accordion player Cedryl Ballou & his Zydeco Trend-setters, and two Austin-based acts that combine Cajun and Tex-Mex with a distinctive flair, Los Pin-kys and the Gulf Coast Playboys. Bring your Fred Astaires, you?ll need ?em.
