Possessed by Paul James

Konrad Wert is a freak. Onstage, he rages and moans like a man under the influence of some unseen power. It only makes sense, then, that he performs as Possessed by Paul James, a one-man band in the Appalachian, psychotic tradition. Switching from banjo to fiddle to guitar and stomp-box, Wert rocks and wails like a banshee between growling in his deep, animalesque tone. Growing up in Immokalee, Fla., in a Mennonite family only added to his eccentricities. Wert has since left the church, but his revival style exorcisms are rooted firmly in religion. Before releasing his self-titled debut in 2006 on Italy's Shake Your Ass Records (home also to local Austin troupes Black Joe Lewis, Chili Cold Blood, and This Damn Town), Wert traveled the country, gathering influences with the wind. Now, his culmination of blues, punk, roots, and folk translates to a singular and, yes, possessed vision of pure passion from the gut. In 2006, the nomadic Wert left the confines of the city for a little cabin in the woods of Howard, Colo., but he has since returned to Central Texas. – Darcie Stevens

""One-man band Konrad Wert grew up in a Mennonite family, raised by preacher father and a piano player mother, which accounts for both the baptized-in-fire-soul and musical versatility heard in his gritty Old World music. T-Model Ford
Mississippi native T-Model Ford first picked up a guitar at age 58, but he’s always lived the blues. He was plowing fields at 6, shanked a man at 22, and served two years on a chain gang for the murder. As his 2002 set of Delta swamp testifies, Ford is a Bad Man, and 2008’s Jack Daniel Time proves he can still kill. Possessed by Paul James takes first stab. Octopus Project and the Drones help premiere the All Tomorrow’s Parties documentary outside. See “Off the Record."

Sweatfest
Whether out of nervousness or pleasure, the royal raunch-rap of Yo Majesty’s “Kryptonite Pussy” is guaranteed to make you perspire. The Tampa, Fla.-based threesome, which left jaws and sports bras on the floor at South by Southwest 07, headlines Sweatfest, juxtaposed with local Slim Shady extra Damp Heat and one-man hollerin’ crew Possessed by Paul James. San Marcos hip-hop collective Word Association lets loose more positive vibrations, along with Prison Folk Rock, Mouseabout, and more. 7pm.

The Comas
Spells burns slower than the Comas' 2004 breakthrough, Conductor ("Invisible Drugs," "Hologram"), yet the NYC/Chapel Hill, N.C., quintet's boy/girl climax gushes ecstatic nonetheless. Andy Herod and Nicole Gehweiler's vocal commingling remains typically sleepy/explosive on LP No. 4 and first for Vagrant. In the Lounge with solo prophet Possessed by Paul James, shoegazing locals Experimental Aircraft, and L.A.'s dreamy Great Northern, expect bell, book, and candle rock.
02/05/07 @ The Parish
Possessed By Paul James, Paleo, Klier, Ralph White
Bitter roots and wounded pop, honed solo.

Tom Waits Hoot Night

The Weird Weeds
Weird Feelings is the name of the new CD by Austin trio the Weird Weeds, and it couldn’t be more appropriate. The three Weeds have a synergistic relationship on disc and live, fusing Nick Hennies’ staccato drumming and percussion with guitarists Aaron Russell’s pluck and Sandy Ewen’s sliding haunt. Guests include locals Ralph White and Red Hunter, making for a beautifully unnerving experience. Possessed by Paul James growls first and Knoxville, Tenn., duo WS Burn provide the dusty blues.

Walter Daniels CD Release
Daniels leads the Trashcan Parade, with some bomp from Chili Cold Blood, Possessed by Paul James, and Mario Matteoli of the Weary Boys.

Constantines, Oakley Hall
On disc, Toronto’s Constantines want to love you, but onstage, they want to kill you. Such is the nature of rock & roll. Last fall’s Tournament of Hearts (Sub Pop), named after the Canadian women’s curling championship, exerts the same grunting, sweaty energy born of punk and pop. Equally content to genre-straddle is NYC sextet Oakley Hall, whose impressive second album, Gypsum Strings (Jagjaguwar), eyes distorted psych mantra jams and fiddle-heavy country stomps. Locals Camp X-Ray, Possessed by Paul James, and the Come Latelys open.
02/24/06 @ Emo's
P.O.S., Turbo Nemesis, SIMS
The former skate punk gets rapping on his latest Rhymesayers disc Audition. Outside, Knife in the Water, Possessed by Paul James, and Poison 13 play a benefit for Sweatbox.

Shake Your Ass Records Revue
Shake Your Ass Records is the Italian home for all things Austin. Celebrating the release of Rock ‘n’ Roll Motherfucker Redux, local pedal steel trio Chili Cold Blood headlines with a searing mix of blues, country, and rock. Local garage rock supergroup This Damn Town debuts their This Time 7-inch, and Possessed by Paul James brings the singular fire of his self-titled LP to the stage. Black Joe Lewis & Cool Breeze open with some old-school soul off their SYA self-titled 7-inch. The label that lives up to its name.
01/04/06 @ The Parlor
Klier Channel, Ralph White, Possessed by Paul James
Time to testify, brothers and sisters. It’s time to growl in unison. It’s time to get shaken down like a klepto at a church bake sale. It’s a one-man band affair, you see. Konrad Wert comes alive as Possessed by Paul James, playing fiddle, guitar, banjo, and broken bottles. Former Bad Liver Ralph White drags a little Southern blues out of the bayou with banjo/fiddle/accordion. And Things That Go Pop guitarist Andy Klier goes solo as the somber folk corporate mega-giant Klier Channel. It will be a glorifying hour of witness.

Tribute to R.L. Burnside
Possessed by Paul James, Chili Cold Blood, Walter Daniels, and more tout the fallen blues legend.

Scott Biram, John Schooley & His One Man Band
If Scott H. Biram looks a little darker than usual, it’s because he just returned from Costa Rica, the one-man band’s first vacation in four years – “unless you count hospital time.” When not landing songs in Winona Ryder’s new flick, The Darwin Awards, Biram is (de)polishing a new Bloodshot disc and making one of his last local stops before resuming his trucker-worthy touring schedule. Fellow self-contained blues explosion John Schooley supports with third solo act Possessed by Paul James opening.
