The Black

With a rambunctious garage-pop and 1970s country-rock sound, the Black is primarily the project of Dave Longoria and Alan Schaefer. Locally formed in 2003, the group carries a collective feel with a rotating cast of musicians, including members from an illustrious list of local bands like Trail of Dead, Knife in the Water, AM Syndicate, and Voxtrot. The Black’s 2005 debut, Tanglewood (K-Woo), meshed "Muswell Hillbilly" countrypolitan pop with the rollicking flow of Dylan & the Band’s Rolling Thunder Revue. In 2006, the group also began playing frequently as the backing band for Austin indie singer-songwriter Pink Nasty and, in spring 2007, released the Donna EP, recorded live in a single day. – Doug Freeman

Jonathan Toubin Benefit
Jonathan Toubin’s guitar savagery in local 1990s screamers Noodle and his later work in the Hamicks siphoned that young man’s angst into his locomotive success behind the steel wheels as soul DJ New York Night Train. Critically injured, Toubin was run over by a cab while asleep in his motel bed in Portland, Ore., earlier this month, and nationwide benefits include this all-star local pairing of Polanski-esque indie needlepoint (Knife in the Water) and Girls Against Boys-like guitar glam (Glorium), plus December Boys, the Black, and Quin Galavis.
07/29/11 @ Antone's
Joe Ely
Joe Ely’s new album comes hard-won, windblown with wisdom and sage sentiments. As its title suggests, Satisfied at Last marks the veteran road hog’s life like rings in a tree. That plus the local troubadour’s decades of ace bands and roots-rock from the homegrown Shurman and garage guitar slinging by the Black all make for a tight configuration as Antone’s anniversary wraps to a close.
12/19/09 @ 29th Street Ballroom
Windsor for the Derby
Two stalwarts of the Trance Syndicate era rendezvous in a surprisingly intimate venue: Austin-bred ambient outfit Windsor for the Derby finally returns for its first local performance since releasing last year’s How We Lost, a delicate balance of pop and noise, while … Trail of Dead caps The Century of Self. Voxtrot offshoots International Waters and JC & Co. hop onboard, along with the Folsom Prison blues of the Black and lo-fi duo Kingdom of Suicide Lovers.
11/20/09 @ The Ghost Room
Bosque Brown
Denton’s sweethearts go walking after midnight, with locals the Black and She Sir.
07/11/09 @ Stubb's
Spoon x 3
Having topped nearly every festival bill in the country, Spoon can afford to play Austin on its own terms, a fact reiterated by the sold-out backyard blowout at the Scoot Inn in April. This weekend the locals curate and headline a three-night stand at Stubb’s behind newly minted EP Got Nuffin. The three-song fix, partially recorded at Brooklyn’s Rare Book Room, is classic, cryptic Spoon, led by Britt Daniel’s dagger sneer, with the type of left-wall experimentation not heard since 1998’s A Series of Sneaks. Austin’s Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears turn up the heat early on Thursday, armed with neo-rhythm and soul from the band’s Jim Eno-produced debut, Tell ’Em What Your Name Is!, followed by Portland, Ore.’s indie-rock standard-bearers Quasi. Friday juxtaposes the hardened classic country of local ringer Dale Watson with Low’s intimate restraint, while Spoon flaunts its tastemaking credentials on Saturday with Deerhunter offshoot Atlas Sound and the precocious delinquency of Austin’s the Strange Boys.
04/25/09 @ Artseen Alliance
NadaMoo! Ice Cream Social
’Tis the season for politics in A-town, and this fundraiser for City Council candidate Chris Riley includes a sweet payoff. Riley’s vision of a green Austin gets scooped during this ice cream social, courtesy of locals NadaMoo!, and local sounds abound with La Snacks, Baby Robots, Dikes of Holland, Peel, Follow That Bird!, the Black, and Cry Blood Apache delivering the brain freeze.
12/13/08 @ Red 7
Trail of Dead, Glorium
If there’s one thing Austinites love, it’s an old-school party, so happy holidays from 1995. Trail of Dead headlines outside as its (almost) original threepiece, and Paul Streckfus’ 1990s San Antonio avant-garders Glorium celebrate the 10th anniversary of rarely heard fourth LP Close Your Eyes by playing it in its entirety. Those Peabodys trash the outside stage first, and Diagonals, the Black, and Ume turn up the heat inside.
11/20/08 @ Continental Club
San Saba County CD Release
Post-alt.country-fried chops. The Black and the Georgian Company headline.
10/19/08 @ Emo's
Deer Tick
Originally released last year on Jana Hunter’s Feow label, Deer Tick’s debut LP, War Elephant, is receiving a much deserved reissue courtesy of Partisan Records, and the Brooklyn-by-way-of-Rhode Island group has expanded to a quartet in celebration. Deer Tick’s lo-fi charm still bites primarily behind John McCauley’s lazy, nasal howl winding through desperate narratives with a lilting alt-folk heart pumping a quirky, indie rock pulse. Locals the Black stomp it out first.
07/18/08 @ Hole in the Wall
The Strange Boys/Ripe
Since sliding their stage to the back room, the Hole has loaded up on lineups that warrant the new minimal weekend cover. This weekend cleans out the garage with recent In the Red signees the Strange Boys’ bluesy jangle on Friday, alongside the Black’s rolling, Dylan-esque ballads, and new Austinites Harlem cutting fevered lines from their recent Free Drugs. Nic Armstrong pulls double duty Saturday with a solo set and new project Ripe’s scratchy pop. Shapes Have Fangs and San Antonio quartet Hacienda open.
05/15/08 @ Lamberts
The Black, Follow That Bird!
Black and blues and pop all over.
03/21/08 @ The Parish
Peel, the Black, the Story Of

02/22/08 @ Lamberts
The Golden Boys, the Black
Garage boys gone wild, plus sonic North Carolina twins the Spider Bags.
02/15/08 @ Hole in the Wall
The Black
There’s nothing like two nights in the Hole to give you a bit of perspective. Brazos frontman Martin Crane flies solo Friday with help from rootsy local boys the Black and all-lady punk trio Follow That Bird! Saturday, Austin mainstay Mike Nicolai opens with bottom-of-the-bottle Americana, along with the jangly retro-pop of the Bellfuries and the VU-tinged stomp of local singer-songwriter Leatherbag. Don’t forget to pass the tip jar.
02/06/08 @ Club de Ville
The Black, the Viet Minh, Shapes Have Fangs
Most bands start in a garage. These locals never left it. The Black headlines this 101X-sponsored show with blues and rockabilly twang, as heard on the trio’s new, vinyl-only Donna EP. The Viet Minh drops out of the Black Angels and tunes into stripped-down psych that moans and drones. And while no one’s exactly sure when the transformation took place, openers Shapes Have Fangs have evolved into a Kinks-y garage-pop powerhouse. Don’t call it a revival.
12/28/07 @ Emo's
Red & White Winter Party
The only thing more depressing than the holidays are the days lingering between Christmas and the new year, but Emo’s leaves the lights up for a pair of locals, slurring blues-rock stompers the Black and neon swaying Red Leaves. Those Voxtrotians keep a yule log burning as a one-off Christmas Special, but don’t expect traditional tunes. Newborn conglomerate School Police, members of the Hunnies and Belaire, starts things off.
12/01/07 @ Hole in the Wall
The Black, Yellow Fever
Locals spin the color wheel.
09/01/07 @ The Scoot Inn
Austin Sound Anniversary
To celebrate a successful year in cyberspace, the local champion of independent music (www.austinsound.net) chalks up its luck with a 13-band ATX lineup: Golden Bear, Peel, Brazos, Black Before Red, the Black, Bill Baird’s Sunset, and the Charles Potts Magic Windmill Band occupy the outside, while Leatherbag, Transmography, Benko, Virgin of the Birds, the Narrow Escapes, and Tullie work inside, with free food and drinks while they last. 3pm.
08/10/07 @ The Scoot Inn
Headdress
Headdress has been through the desert on a horse with no name, man, and they’ve had a vision. You can hear it on the nomadic local duo’s latest, Turquoise (Totem Songs), a woozy desert strum that sounds kind of like Tangerine Dream meets Wooden Wand & the Vanishing Voice in Joshua Tree. Austin bluesmen the Black headline and Bobby Ray Coy gets low. Spirit animals not allowed. 7pm.
06/29/07 @ Mohawk
The Black, San Saba County
Capping off a night of neo-retro, the Black bakes a new set of nuggets from its already recorded but unreleased Donna EP, which pours classic garage pop and Sweetheart of the Rodeo-era Byrds into a Muswell hillbilly bouillabaisse. Black Joe Lewis serves the soul-food appetizer with slices from his upcoming EP, The Afrodesiac, while San Saba County and Black Water Gospel spike the alt.country punch.
03/31/07 @ Emo's
The Howling Hex
Neil’s back with openers the Black.
03/10/07 @ Beerland
Viet Minh, Brothers & Sisters
Thirty years after the summer of love, you can get your kicks at Beerland, a bit of a stretch from Route 66, but if you stir up enough dust, you can’t tell. The Brothers & Sisters and the Black Angels’ equally psychedelic side project Viet Minh plus Charleston, S.C., easy riders the Explorer’s Club, the Black, and Tenlons Fort turn back the clock.
01/04/07 @ Beerland
The Black
The Black cut through the kudzu like rum-running joyriders, delivering an Americana-infused garage-blues romp that comes fully loaded with a soulful backbeat and lackadaisical intonation. Hold your breath; the quintet’s Donna EP is due at any moment. Portland, Ore.-to-Austin transplant Jack Gibson is the driving force behind Tenlons Fort. Karrie Hopper’s plaintive-voiced acoustic introspection caps this eclectic bill.
11/10/06 @ Trophy's
The Black, Horse + Donkey, Lomita
Here are three reasons to get your ass to South Austin and drink 17 Lone Stars. Locals Lomita gracefully sew late-night melodies into massive guitar sounds for a not-so-bloody Valentine; trio Horse + Donkey is reverb-heavy and as jerk-worthy as a stubborn mule; headliners the Black cleanup with country rock to go, hashing out tunes from their upcoming EP, Donna.

I Love You but I've Chosen Darkness
Fresh out of the studio, I Love You but I’ve Chosen Darkness is doing a reverse hibernation. This summer they holed up at Austin’s Mob House with Ministry’s Paul Barker to complete the follow-up to their 2003 EP, and now they’ve finally finished the album. Next spring Secretly Canadian will release the fruits of their sweaty summer labors. Be prepared for dark pop-edged New Wave and the twangdango of the Black.
