Les Savy Fav
Summer 2001, Coney Island. I’m standing front and center, sweating profusely under the oppressive July sun as Les Savy Fav commands the stage. Singer Tim Harrington is wearing flimsy, red jogging shorts, then he’s wearing only a small white towel. He runs off stage in the towel, through the crowd, right toward the Cyclone, and gets in line. The other band members look at one another and end the song. Over the years, I’ve seen Harrington do the glow worm through the crowd and don a pair of unnecessarily fitted sweatpants, but his energetic stage presence is only one part of the NYC quartet’s assault of art rock blast through punk anthems. Six albums in, LSF hits its stride with latest Let’s Stay Friends (Frenchkiss). God only knows what Harrington will do to and on Emo’s outside stage. H-Town’s Fatal Flying Guilloteens and locals Attack Formation tear it down and build it up.
05/25/07 @ Mohawk
Matt & Kim/Pink Nasty
08/29/06 @ Emo's
Plastic Constellations
Boozy Minneapolis quartet channels the 'Mats, along with Fatal Flying Guilloteens, the Boxing Lesson, and We'll Go Machete.
10/20/05 @ Emo's
DMBQ, Fatal Flying Guilloteens
The Tokyo underground blew open faster than you can say Godzilla when DMBQ pulverized America with their debut album in 1995. The quartet’s paisley, blues, rosemary, and acid-leanings blend garage with psych in the most unnatural of ways, coupling Zeppelin-strength riffs with polyester shirts. Their most recent album, The Essential Sounds From the Far East, whips up a raucous dance party, as if the psychedelic horse on the cover didn’t tell you that. Houston’s Fatal Flying Guilloteens and locals Camp X-Ray and Attic Ted open.
09/30/05 @ Beerland
The Sword, Fatal Flying Guilloteens, Skullening
Sure, you could stay home and watch Supernanny, but if you really want to see yelling and tantrums, you’ll want to be at Beerland for some local action. The Ugly Beats sock hop in their garage, San Antonio’s Animals of the Bible and Skullening bang and clang in the kitchen, Houston’s Fatal Flying Guilloteens kick and scream out on the patio, and the Sword crunches out those bowel shakers. You might need to wear a diaper.
01/30/04 @ Emo's
For Steve Birmingham’s interview on indie-rock’s rarest comedian, see "Behind America’s Funnyman," p.35. Hamburger will be joined by Les Messieurs Du Rock, celebrating their debut CD release, as well as Houston’s Fatal Flying Guilloteens.
