The Texas Sapphires

As the Texas Sapphires round into their fifth year as one of Austin’s premier honky-tonk/Americana/alt.country bands, their makeup remains essentially unchanged, though the group’s revolving-door lineup may lead one to believe otherwise. The Sapphires started in 2003 as the brainchild of East Coast transplant and former punk rock guitarist Billy Brent Malkus and Texas native (and former Sincola frontwoman) Rebecca Cannon, and the band has remained theirs ever since. Through the comings and goings of more than 20 bandmates, Malkus and Cannon have built a songbook of originals, old-country standards, and punk covers that run the gamut in style from waltz to Western swing, from outlaw county to bluegrass, all anchored by Malkus' lightning-quick guitar runs; Cannon’s versatile, almost-antique voice; and the pair’s warm harmonies. 2006 saw the release of the band’s first LP, the Lloyd Maines-produced Valley So Steep, on Stag Records, which earned the band critical praise, accolades in The Austin Chronicle's Music Poll, and the title of Best New Band at the Austin Music Awards. – Josh Rosenblatt

Old Pecan Street Festival
10/12/07 @ Continental Club
Charlie Louvin
Charlie and Ira Louvin defined the high/lonesome bluegrass harmonies of the Fifties before Ira’s alcoholism and subsequent death forced Charlie to follow “The Christian Life” alone. Last spring’s self-titled LP, the younger Louvin’s first in 10 years, returned Charlie to Louvin classics, his voice haunted by Ira’s absence but patriarchal alongside guests like Jeff Tweedy and Will Oldham. Dallas quintet Eleven Hundred Springs steel the show early, with headliners the Texas Sapphires dropping newly cut Roadhouse Gems.
07/28/07 @ The Scoot Inn
Texas Moratorium Benefit
This eclectic benefit collects a wide array of sounds to question Texas' zeal for lethal injection. Of particular interest is the case of Kenneth Foster, slated for execution Aug. 30 under the Law of Parties even though he didn't murder anyone. This variety show features local hip-hopper Damp Heat starting at 8pm, followed by Laura Scarborough's pianistics, the Invincible Czars' klezmerlike avant-gardism, and the Texas Sapphires' country, as well as clowns, dancers, food, and raffles. www.texasmoratorium.org
08/27/06 @ Waterloo Park
Hot Sauce Festival
The heat, the beer, the hordes. The music. No, it’s not ACL Fest, it’s the Chronicle’s annual excuse to drink more beer: chips & salsa! Actually, all those leftovers usually find their way here to the paper Monday morning, but the music stays in Waterloo Park. This year, kid band NewBoy (11am) leads into the White Ghost Shivers’ raunchy ragtime (noon), Guy Forsyth’s yeoman’s blues (1:30pm), and the country honk of the Texas Sapphires (3:30pm). The event and its soundtrack are free, but best bring beer money. 11am-5pm.
