REVIEWED By Marjorie Baumgarten, Wed., Sept. 20, 2000
Everyone knows the stories about the knights who went off to fight the Crusades and win the Holy Grail. But what of the story about the men who returned feeling defeated because of their failure to find the Grail? These are the wandering souls that Bresson chooses to focus on in this meditation on the end of chivalry and spiritual loss. Bresson’s knights are wanderers in the forest whose every move reverberates with the clang of chain mail.
