Fahrenheit 451

Fahrenheit 451

1966, NR, 111 min. Directed by François Truffaut. Starring Julie Christie, Oskar Werner, Cyril Cusack, Anton Diffring.

REVIEWED By Marjorie Baumgarten, Thu., July 22, 1999

Truffaut's only film in English is an adaptation of Ray Bradbury's science fiction novel about a future in which books are banned and their possession is a high crime. Werner plays a dutiful fireman whose job it is to burn books until one day the seeds of doubt are planted in his head. The movie is filmed in a rather low-key, dispassionate manner; the score is by Bernard Herrmann.

The 400 Blows
Truffaut’s first and perhaps most affecting feature, The 400 Blows, tells the story of a young boy and his petty crimes and mischief. The freeze frame that concludes the movie is one of the most quoted images in the history of cinema.
