Opening ceremonies

Openings are the order of the day. Rob Pate and the Péché team replaced the ill-fated Pleasant Storage Room with the tropical island-themed Isla (208 W. Fourth) earlier this week. The new spot will feature island-inspired dishes created by Péché chef John Lichtenberger plus classic rum drinks and tiki cocktails.

Chef Florian Prelog, owner of Prelog's European Kitchen & Bar (360 Nueces), held soft opening service this week in anticipation of the new eatery's official opening on Friday, March 6. We first told readers about the hot young Austrian chef when he purchased Garrido's restaurant on the street level of the 360 condominiums in May of 2014.

Jodi Elliott has announced the opening date of her new Bribery Bakery (2013 Wells Branch Pkwy. #109) is scheduled for Wednesday, March 18. She'll celebrate the opening with a private party for 40 guests who sign up for a chance to win an invitation at www.briberybakery.com/sneakpeek. Bribery will offer a full range of both sweet and savory treats and an extensive selection of coffee drinks from Casa Brasil. The store will be open daily from 7am-7pm.

Suzi Yi of Suzi's China Grill & Sushi Bar (7858 Shoal Creek) is comfortably ensconced in her newly remodeled building, so restaurant broker and project manager Frank Seely will begin the finish-out on the second-floor restaurant space above. The upstairs spot will be home to Rebel Pizza Bar with a menu of appetizers, salads, and artisan pizzas being developed by chef Alex Kahn, craft beers on tap, custom cocktails, and a scenic rooftop patio. Seely reports they're shooting for a late summer opening.

A Gloria Reynolds winery tasting room and boutique winery operation will soon become part of the facilities at Deanna Serra's new Art for the People Gallery (1711 S. First). Austin-based international entrepreneur Greg Hall has entered into a partnership with Portuguese winery owner Julian Cuellar Reynolds to bring wines from the prestigious Reynolds portfolio to the Texas market. Hall reports Rae Wilson of Wine for the People is assisting him in promoting Reynolds wines at events here in Austin and that he hopes to have the tasting room itself open in time to capitalize on the crowds generated by this month's South by Southwest Interactive, Film, and Music Festival. He also says he and his partners are searching for a property in the central city on which to build an Austin replica of the Reynolds winery.

Jacoby's Restaurant & Mercantile (3235 E. Cesar Chavez) has announced the hiring of pastry chef Mindy Cohrs, formerly of Jeffrey's. Cohrs will contribute many of her own signature creations in addition to executing the Jacoby family recipes for desserts, pastries, and breads. Look for her sticky buns and sweet and savory kolaches to become an integral part of chef Carlos Ysaguirre's new brunch menu when Jacoby's launches brunch service Sunday, March 8.
