The food writers and I have been covering a lot of events this week on our On the Range blog, starting with my visit to the Travis High School Culinary Arts program tamalada (where the students made delicious, authentic tamales) and Kenny Pailes' photo gallery of food shots from the Food for Thought gala at the COTA track. New writers checked out Eric Asimov's booksigning and the Urban Farm Bicycle Tour, I judged the Central Market Gingerbread House contest, and other writers caught Raj Patel's appearance, the media tasting at Lucky Robot, and East Side King's debut at the Hole in the Wall (check out Christian Remde's new video with Paul and Moto (www.vimeo.com/54209553). Up next, there's the media opening at Sway, a live chef auction, and on and on.

Austin food was in the national news again last week, what with YouTube viewers getting a tour of Hyde Park dining spots during Tolly Moseley's Hungry In – Austin show, plus a big spread about Austin in the New York Post that revealed some serious leg work: breakfast tacos at La Fruta Feliz, decadently delicious hot chocolates with homemade marshmallows from the Fete Accompli farmers' market booth, tongue katsu from the ESK trailer outside the Grackle, a Dirty South burger on a huge doughnut at the new Gourdough's Public House, a loaf of Soup Can Bread from a Foreign & Domestic bake sale, and a bowl of jungle curry from Sway, before it was even open!

Speaking of Foreign & Domestic, be sure to ask Ned and Jodi Elliott about their pop-up ­restaurant experience in New York City over the weekend, where they were guest chefs at an annual event called Immaculate Infatuation. From what we gathered on Twitter, they were a big hit. We'll share the details of Jodi's Foreign & Domestic Bake Sale shops in the former La Boîte cargo containers as soon as we get them.

Stopped by Raymond Tatum's Three Little Pigs trailer the other day and saw the attractive new patio seating area that came with some licensing changes at East End Wines (1209 Rose­wood). Now that they've changed from a package store license to a winery license, they can continue to operate as a retail wine shop, but also offer wine for on-premise consumption. Wine buyer Sam Hovland says the change will make it possible for them to offer more wine classes, tastings, and special events, in addition to making it possible for customers to rent a glass and enjoy wine with chef Tatum's Asian-influenced, pig-centric cuisine at a comfortable patio table.

Friends who still mourn the loss of several fine eateries in the Tarrytown Shopping Center at Wind­sor and Exposition are cautiously optimistic about the new Austin Java that opened last week at 3110 Windsor, serving a vegetarian menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a full bar.

Oops: In last week's review of the Mansion at Judges' Hill, we mistakenly reported that C3 Presents had bought the property. The new owners are in fact a group of investors known as Rio Grande ATX Investments. We regret the error.
