• The Culinary Academy of Austin (6020-B Dillard Circle, 451-5743) hosts its second annual High School Culinary Competition for teams of high school students. Participating schools will send teams of six students, who must prepare four servings of a set three-course menu during the allotted competition time. Judging will be done by American Culinary Federation-qualified judges, and prizes will be awarded. For complete details, go to www.culinaryacademyofaustin.com. Friday, May 8, 8am-1pm.

• Check out the first Texas Brew-B-Que in Waterloo Park (14th & Trinity) this weekend. This new event brings together three things Austinites really love: beer, barbecue, and live music. This grownup happening provides major brewers, craft brewers, and home brewers alike the opportunity to showcase their beers for the public as well as a panel of judges. Both barbecue restaurants and individual cooking teams will compete and provide demonstrations. There will be fun and games while local and national music acts perform on the two outdoor stages. Tickets are $15. To enter the barbecue competition, get more info, or buy tickets online, go to www.roadwayevents.com. Saturday, May 9, 11am-11pm.

• Help the National Association of Letter Carriers in its drive to Stamp Out Hunger. All you need to do is fill a grocery sack with nonperishable food items and leave it by the mailbox. Mail carriers will pick up the bags and distribute them to the food bank. Saturday, May 9.

• Take that mother out to lunch! Sunday, May 10.
