Polvo's logo is a dust devil, and the word translates literally as "dust," but the name actually comes from the nickname of the owner, Jose Linares. When Jose was a cook, he was so fast that he was given the moniker "Polvo." All we know is that Polvo's is up there with the best of them when it comes to authentic, delicious Mexican food, and it remains one of our favorites.

The food at Polvo's is Michoacán cuisine -- this is not your average Tex-Mex comida. Breakfast offers a number of tacos with all the usual options, but you'll also find the fabulous machacado and egg plate ($3.99). Machacado is sun-dried beef that's shredded and added to scrambled eggs, and it's the platter of choice here. The migas ($3.99) are some of the best in Austin, with bits of tortilla, serrano chiles, tomato, and onion spiking the eggs.

Polvo's is justifiably famous for their tacos al pastor ($1.99), made from diced meat cooked in guajillo chile and citrus, and topped with onion and cilantro. But all their tacos are first-rate, and are made with handmade corn tortillas. Be sure to try the mole, tongue (very tasty), chicharron, and fish or shrimp tacos also.

No order should be placed without at least one side of roasted onion and poblano strips, a large portion for $1.00. And Polvo's offers a huge assortment of beers and primo margaritas. Happy hour is Monday through Friday, from 3 to 7pm, and it's a great way to beat the crowds and get the jump on the night.

South First Street is becoming known as a mecca for Mexican food, and Polvo's is definitely one of the leaders of the pack. For a taste of authentic comida Michoacána head south, and look for the dust devil -- "Polvo" Linares will be there spinning up some fabulous food.
