Dear Editor,
Regarding the recent attention drawn to same-sex marriage in Texas by the legal marriage certificate issued to a couple in Travis County [“
Travis County Allows First Texas Gay Marriage,” Newsdesk, Feb. 19]. America is on the cusp of a new way we perceive “traditional” marriage. Is the “tradition” eliminated when it is no longer solely between a man and a woman? Are the fundamental values of marriage compromised because of one's sexual orientation? Do same-sex couples not wish to love, honor, and obey until death do they part? What is it exactly that Gov. Abbot and Attorney General Ken Paxton are trying to protect? I ask these questions to seek the answers. We have all witnessed the “sacred” institution of marriage, on some level, violated by men, women, people. The fundamentals of marriage are not decided by the state, the supreme court or the majority vote, but by the two people sharing the union in which they alone decided to embark. I implore the people of Texas to speak out against inequality of marital rights, become part of this revolutionary change of perception, and make the political leaders of Texas uphold our unaligned right to pursue happiness.
