Finally! Hats off to our police chief for putting in place a policing policy that recognizes that mentally disturbed people are in fact ill [
Headlines, News, Sept. 28]. Would you stuff a dozen doughnuts down the throat of a diabetic? Not if you care about his welfare. Same deal with suspects who are mentally ill. As the slash-and-burn of social services continues in Texas, these specially trained police may be the only chance for help these folks have.
