With 130-odd features and nine full days of programming, the South by Southwest Film Festival this year was undoubtedly full of success stories.
But undoubtedly one of the people with the most to celebrate from this year's SXSW was Destin Daniel Cretton, whose Short Term 12 – the story of a supervisor at a group home for teenagers starring Brie Larson and John Gallagher Jr. – took both the Grand Jury Prize for Best Narrative Feature and the Audience Award for the same category.
The San Francisco Film Society (which supported the film with a $79,000 postproduction grant) caught up with Cretton recently to talk about his childhood in Hawaii, the collaborative process behind the film, and much more.
