Horns Season Gets Under Way
After just a week of preseason training, the Longhorn soccer team takes the field tonight for an exhibition match against TCU: 7pm at Myers Stadium, at the corner of Manor and Red River, just east of the football stadium. Admission is free and it'll also be streamed live on TexasSports.com. Click through for a few tips on what to look for from this year's Horns.

Horns Look to Rebound Friday Against U of H
The UT Longhorns dropped their season opener Friday, 2-1 to TCU, and with it went a 26-game home unbeaten streak, dating back to 2006. It was a disappointing performance – the Horns were outshot 14-7, and let an unheralded Horned Frog squad totally dominate for long stretches – but as I noted last week, this is a young team, and they'll get better as the season progresses.

Longhorns Opener Friday; Aztex on TV Sunday
The UT Longhorns open their season this Friday, hosting TCU at 7pm, Aug. 21. UT has never lost to TCU, and has a 26-game home unbeaten streak, dating back to 2006. The very young Horns will start four or five freshmen; two to watch: Brazilian-born and Chicago-raised Leah Fortune, who had UT's lone goal, and over half of the team's shots, in a 2-1 exhibition loss last Friday at LSU, and midfielder Sophie Campise, out of Dallas' Ursuline Academy. There's a special $3 Opening Night Bundle: one ticket, one popcorn, and a discount coupon to Longhorns, Ltd.; advance sale only; call 232-3865.

The Austin Aztex are on the road this week, but you can catch them on TV; the nationally televised game at the Montreal Impact is on Fox Soccer Channel, 2:30pm Sunday, Aug. 23. The Aztex played well last Sunday against Minnesota, taking the lead twice before giving up a very disappointing equalizer in the 89th minute and settling for a 2-2 draw.

Below: more on the Aztex, plus Women's Pro Soccer and Champions League results.

Four Longhorns Go in Pro Draft
The UT Longhorn defense was well represented in the first-ever Women's Professional Soccer college draft: Kasey Moore went 15th overall, Boston's second pick after taking Amy Rodriguez first overall. Stephanie Logterman and Jill Gilbeau went 20th and 22nd, to St. Louis and Washington, respectively. UT career scoring leader Kelly (Wilson) Schmedes is also heading to Boston, as the 44th selection. In all, 70 players were drafted by the seven teams, adding to the several dozen U.S. and international players the league had already signed. Play starts March 29. The U.S. Men play their first game of 2009, a friendly against Sweden, Sat., Jan. 24, 4:30pm on FSC.

Longhorns Come Up Short, and Other News
The UT Longhorns won their first game in the NCAAs, beating Washington State, 1-0, then were ousted, 2-0, by the host Portland Pilots, who outshot UT 22-4 and dominated play despite having three starters off in Chile, playing for the U.S. in the Under-20 Women's World Cup. It was the third time in five years that the Pilots have ended UT's season in the NCAAs. (Speaking of youth World Cups, the U.S. lost to North Korea, 2-1, in the final of the U-17 Women's World Cup on Sunday in New Zealand.) And so, suddenly, the local college soccer season is over, though elsewhere it goes on. Texas A&M was the only Texas or Big 12 team to make it through the first weekend in Division I; they're at Florida on Sunday. Texas A&M-Commerce advanced to the final 16 in Women's D2. Still alive on the men's side: Wichita Falls' Midwestern State in Division II, and unbeaten Trinity of San Antonio in Division III. No Texas teams qualified in Men's Division I. Horns on the Road as NCAAs Kick Off; Aztex Unveil New Logo
If the UT Longhorns are going to make it to the NCAA Final Four this year, they'll have to take the long road. The Horns are off to Oregon for the tourney's first round: they play Washington State at 7pm Friday evening, while host and No. 2 seed Portland plays Northern Arizona. The winners face off at 3pm Sunday for a spot in the Sweet 16. I'm sure the Horns cringed when they saw they'd drawn Portland. The Pilots are a very good team; they're also 8-0-0 all-time against UT, and ended the Horns' season in the 2004 and 2006 NCAAs. Texas State is going to the dance as well; after winning their fourth Southland Conference tournament title last weekend, they're at Texas A&M, Friday night at 7pm. St. Edward's men and women were both dissed by the NCAA, failing to draw Division II bids despite finishing 13-4-2 and 13-3-1, respectively. Bummer.

Longhorns Knocked Out of Big 12 Tourney
The UT Longhorns gave up three second-half goals to lose to Missouri, 3-1, in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament Wednesday – the first time all year the Horns had given up three goals in a game. So they won't defend their two straight tournament titles, and now await NCAA bids, coming out Nov. 14. St. Edward's men won a pair on the road last week to move to 13-4 for the year, 14th in the country, and in position for one of two NCAA bids from their region. The Hilltoppers close out the regular season this weekend at home: 2pm Friday and Sunday, Nov. 7 and 9, against St. Mary's and TAMU-International.

The St. Edward's women look good for the NCAAs as well; they end their season on the road in Odessa and Dallas. MLS playoffs continue this weekend, with the second leg of the first round. The Houston Dynamo hosts New York, 2pm Sunday, Nov. 9, Robertson Stadium. What a difference a week makes for Stoke City in the English Premier League …
