World Cup Daily: July 1
By Nick Barbaro, July 1, 2014, 7:53am, The Score
Today is the last day of the round of 16, as the U.S. tries to upset Belgium and advance to the quarterfinals. Here in Austin, two big watch parties have recently been announced for the 3pm game: one at ACL Live, and one outdoors at the Long Center, sponsored by the Austin Aztex; catch it there, or at your favorite watering hole.
Monday Results
France 2, Nigeria 0; Germany 2, Algeria 1 (ET)
Both these games were a lot tougher than expected, but in the end, the European favorites eliminated the last two African entries – France took until the last 10 minutes of regulation to score; Germany left it until overtime to get their brace, before Algeria clawed one back in fourth-half stoppage time.
Tuesday’s Games:
11am: Argentina-Switzerland
3pm: USA-Belgium
Argentina’s the huge favorite over a very good Swiss side; the U.S.-Belgium game should be just about a toss-up. Good news for the Americans: Jozy Altidore has been cleared for action, though it’s not clear if he’ll actually play.
And looking ahead to the quarterfinals:
Friday, July 4
11am: Germany-France
3pm: Brazil-Colombia
Saturday, July 5
11am: (Argentina-USA??)
3pm: Netherlands-Costa Rica
