The Austin Aztex will make a “major announcement relating to the team’s future plans in the city” this Tuesday at Austin City Hall, according to a press release sent out Friday.
The team is declining to disclose any details publicly in advance of the announcement, but it’s worth taking another look at their mission statement, whose first sentence reads: “The Austin Aztex are committed to being Austin’s professional soccer team…” It goes on to enumerate four basic “Vision” elements:
To provide high-level soccer to the Austin area;
To develop elite local talent;
To serve as a resource for the local soccer community;
To develop strong local business partnerships.
From early indications, the new moves should help serve all of those goals and visions.
The Aztex’ announcement will take place Tuesday, June 10 at noon, in the Austin City Council Main Chamber, 301 W. Second. The principals will be Aztex owners Rene Van De Zande and David Markley, Founder and CEO. All Austin soccer supporters are Invited.
I’ll post details of the announcement immediately after the press conference ends.
Meanwhile, on the field:
The Aztex extended their PDL Mid South Division lead on their two-game road trip to play the Mississippi Brilla, with a scoreless draw Thursday, followed up by what sounds like a pretty dominating 2-0 win on Saturday. The Aztex are now 5-0-1 on the year, still the best record in the 64-team Premier Development League.
Next up: the Aztex host the second-place Laredo Heat at 7:30pm Saturday, June 14 – the first of three games in 17 days against the Heat, a perennial fixture in the PDL post-season, and the only team that could still challenge the Aztex for the Mid South Division title.
