Worried about how you look in running gear? Don't worry. Every year, there's one race in Austin that gets rid of any body issues. Next Saturday, the Austin Gorilla Run returns in all its fur-clad glory, but it warms up this weekend with two gatherings of the troop this weekend.
Tonight, Jan. 18, there's the annual pub crawl, starting at 5pm at the Cedar Street Courtyard (208 W. Fourth.) Anyone who makes it to all seven stops (Austin Ale House, Fado Irish Pub & Restaurant Austin, Lavaca Street Bar, TenOak Bourbon House and Lounge, and The Ginger Man) will receive a free Silverback Pale Ale t-shirt from Austin's Thirsty Planet Brewery.
If you prefer your drinks to be delivered to you, then tomorrow, Jan. 19, there'll be a special screening of 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes at the Alamo Drafthouse Slaughter Lane (tickets available now.)
You'll also be able to sign up for next weekend's gorilla run, the only race that comes with a gorilla suit included in the registration price. Yes, next Saturday, Jan. 25, there will be hundreds of runners, walkers, strollers and shamblers in gorilla suits, running a 5K around Mueller. Full details at www.austingorillarun.com. And, yes, you get to keep the gorilla suit.
The whole furry gathering will raise funds for the Mountain Gorilla Conservation Fund, and specifically the Ruth Keesling Wildlife Health and Research Center in Kampala, Uganda. Mountain gorillas are on their slow walk back from the brink of extinction – up from a global population of 248 in 1987 to 880 now – but there's still a long way to go. Facilities like the Keesling Center, with its educational mission and research labs, can go a long way to helping one of our closest evolutionary relatives.
