Unlike about half of the Erwin Center crowd last night, I didn't bail on the Texas-OU basketball game when the Horns fell behind 67-45 with just over 7 minutes to go. But I did turn the sound off to work on other things. Every once in a while I'd peek at the game, but OU kept a pretty commanding lead until Texas made the score an age group, 60-69.
That's when I got back into it. How is it even possible for the Horns to win a game that they were so out of? It could've been that Oklahoma suffered from the curse of the upside down horns. One of the Sooners threw down a dunk and flashed the anti-Horns sign, and at that point the Horns started clawing their way back by blocking out, grabbing turnovers and letting Myck Kabongo, with fresh legs after a 23-game suspension, lead the way. Ending with 31 points, 28 after halftime, the sophomore played the second half of his life, chucking up a pumpkin from his hip to tie the game at 77-77 at the buzzer.
Kabongo hit a three to open overtime, giving the Horns a lead they clung onto until Ioannis Papapetrou put the game away from behind the arc with half a minute left in overtime. Give doghouse dandy Sheldon McClelland credit for hitting five crucial free throws and a couple of threes to end with 18 points, all but two after halftime.
Considering the lost season that Coach Rick Barnes and the Greenhorns have been having, this huge, almost miraculous, come-from-behind win must be especially sweet. If this season was the Mike Tyson/ Robin Givens marriage, last night was the time in a horse-drawn carriage when there was no fear. This team grew balls last night, showing a lot of guts and pride. You don't come to the Erwin and disrespect our guys. Now get that weak-ass shit on the bus back to Norman.
