Back to School With UT Soccer
Fall sports season kicks off with free game
By Will Eidam, 12:24PM, Fri. Aug. 10, 2012
If you've turned into a Soccer Mom during these Olympics after watching the U.S. Women win the gold, spread that love over to collegiate soccer and check out the University of Texas women's soccer team take on the Texas State Bobcats in an exhibition tonight, 7pm. And it's free.
The Longhorns return with a 11-9-1 record from 2011 while the Bobcats had a slightly better season, finishing 14-6-1 and making the NCAA Tournament for only the fifth time in the program's history.
Texas will introduce their new head coach, Angela Kelly, who came from the University of Tennessee (15-7 in 2011), and aims to bring UT back to the glory years of the mid-2000's when the Longhorns made the Sweet 16 three times in four years (2004, 2006, 2007). Also joining the team will be freshman Abby Smith, one of the 21 players selected to play for the U.S. Under-20 Women's National Team in Japan later in August.
After winning the Southland Conference Championship in 2011, Texas State begins their first season in the Western Athletic Conference. Other than the standard set of games versus local Texas teams, the Bobcats will have an entirely new slate of teams to face in 2012.
Vs. Texas State (exhibition): Fri., Aug. 10, 7pm. Free. Mike A. Myers, 707 Clyde Littlefield Dr. www.texassports.com.
