Humane Society of Williamson County Hosts Bowl-a-Thon

By Monica Riese, July 8, 2011, 11:36am, The Score

Nothing perks up a dog's ears like the sound of kibble in the bowl … ing alley?

This Saturday, July 9, from 1 to 4pm, the Humane Society of Williamson County is sponsoring its third annual Bowl-a-Thon at Mel's Lone Star Lanes in Georgetown (1010 N. Austin Ave., 512/930-2220, www.melslonestarlanes.com).

The HSWC (10930 E. Crystal Falls Pkwy., Leander, 512/260-3602, www.hswc.net) instituted a "no-kill" policy at its shelter in 2007 (something the Austin community knows a thing or two about), and it provides low-cost spay/neuter and vaccination services to all Central Texas residents, but those priorities don't come cheaply &ndash especially in these busy summer months, and in particular for a 501(c)(3) that receives no federal funding. The bowl-a-thon is an opportunity for individuals and businesses to contribute money to the cause while having a good time (the Chronicle is sending four of its own, this writer included, to aim for some turkeys for the kitties). The registration fee ($25, individuals; $100, teams of four) covers shoe rentals and three rounds of bowling.

Contact Lindsey Ortiz at lortiz@hswc.net with any questions, or check out www.hswc.net/bowl.html for complete event and registration information. We're fully prepared to be (ahem) bowled over by the support this weekend.
