Longhorns and Hilltoppers Earn Top-10 Rankings, and More
By Nick Barbaro, 11:41AM, Thu. Oct. 4, 2007
Both of Austin’s Top 10-ranked football teams continued their win streaks on the weekend: The UT Lady Longhorns, now ranked second in the country, won a couple of tough physical matches, beating Wright State 2-1 and Texas Tech 1-0. Freshman Niki Arlitt got the winning goal Friday, then assisted on Caitlin Kennedy’s goal to beat Tech and run her scoring streak to six games. UT is at Iowa State Friday night, before coming home to host Nebraska, 1pm Sunday, Oct. 7 at Myers Stadium, Red River & Manor.
St. Edward’s women, meanwhile, have notched six straight shutout wins, beating UT-Permian Basin 1-0 and Dallas Baptist 2-0. The Hilltoppers remain ninth in Division II – but first in the Midwest region, which could help them come tournament time. They’re on the road this week.
With just three games left in the Major League Soccer regular season, the Houston Dynamo host the L.A. Galaxy at 2pm Sunday (Telemundo). No Beckhamania, of course, but a pretty big game: The Dynamo are tied with Chivas USA for first place in the West, and the Galaxy are, improbably, riding a three-game win streak and back in the hunt for the final playoff spot.
Women’s World Cup wrap-up: Wow, is it already over? That seemed to go so quickly. And how did Germany manage to skate through the entire tournament without ever having to face a team that played well? … Oh.
A rash of Champions League upsets Tuesday-Wednesday, including Liverpool and Valencia losing at home, Glasgow Rangers and Celtic upending Lyon and AC Milan, and overall, road teams getting 10 wins in 16 games.
